also known as Tropical Runts
Tropical Runtz is a cross of Runtz and Tropic Truffle from Exotic Genetix that won the Sativa flower category at the 2022 High Times Cannabis Cup Michigan.
Tropical Runtz appears on the winners' lists of the High Times People's Choice competitions in Illinois and Michigan: in 2021 an entry under this name took 3rd place in the Sativa flower category in Illinois, and in 2022 a different one won the Sativa flower category for the recreational market in Michigan. At the same competition in Michigan, a live rosin made from the strain placed 2nd among the solventless concentrates. One strain description also lists a success for 2022 at the Lovers Cup in Montana but gives no placement. The cross of Runtz and Tropic Truffle was bred by Exotic Genetix.
Exotic Genetix combined Runtz, the cross of Zkittlez and Gelato, with Tropic Truffle, a cross of Tropicana Cookies and Mint Chocolate Chip. One description specifies the Gelato portion as Gelato #33. Besides the usual spelling, the strain appears as Tropical Runts. According to one strain description, the seeds exist only as feminized.
The sources contradict each other on classification. A producer that explicitly attributes the strain to Exotic Genetix calls it a sativa-dominant hybrid, and further profiles follow this. Others list it as predominantly indica-leaning; one puts the ratio at 60 % indica to 40 % sativa.
As a parent, Tropical Runtz has gone into several breeding lines. Exotic Genetix crossed it with Bakers Dozen to make Purple Pineapple and with Grape Jubilee to make Twisted Terpz. Moab Genetix used it for MacNruntZ with Mac V2 and for Reckless Runtz with LSP, Zephyr Seeds among others for Gary Payton × Tropical Runtz.
Citrus, tropical fruit and a candy-like sweetness are the common denominator of the descriptions. Pineapple, mango, orange and apricot are named individually, and several profiles also mention banana and a sour note. Beneath these, depending on the source, lie earthy herbs, pepper, floral notes or a trace of gasoline; one profile additionally mentions cheese. User reports range from citrus candy and lilac through lavender to a sample that tasted mainly of pine; one report compared the taste to lemon-based furniture polish.
The descriptions put the stimulating side in the foreground. Users report uplifted mood, talkativeness, drive and creativity, some also concentration, giddiness or tingling. An arousing component is mentioned several times. Several reports describe how the cerebral onset, after some time, shifts into a calmer, physically relaxed phase without tiredness setting in.
Divergent accounts go in both directions. One report describes a strongly sedating effect to the point of immobility, another felt hardly anything, a third found the effect unusually intense. Users and strain descriptions name dry mouth, dry eyes, dizziness and headache as side effects, the latter appearing in one report only after a few hours. At high doses, inner restlessness and paranoid thoughts are described.
Several strain descriptions give the THC content as 24 %, one of them the CBD content as 0 %.
A US supplier of THCA hemp flower publishes a single measurement for a greenhouse-grown batch with the genetics Runtz × Tropic Truffle, without naming the lab or the year of testing. Reported are 16.406 % THCA, 0.270 % delta-9 THC, 0.059 % CBG and 0.595 % THCV; the terpene content is 0.958 %. In this sample linalool leads the terpene profile, followed by β-caryophyllene, limonene and myrcene. Strain descriptions name myrcene, limonene and linalool as the defining terpenes without giving measured values.
For the feminized seeds from Exotic Genetix, one strain description gives around 60 days of flowering time and considers indoor and outdoor cultivation possible. A seed retailer's grow profile rates the strain as easy to cultivate, describes compact plants with above-average yield and dates the outdoor harvest to early to mid-October; as climate it names warm, sunny locations.
According to the same profile and a blog post that cites it, the strain forms dense flowers heavily covered in trichomes, can turn purple toward the end of flowering and responds well to low-stress training.
