Sweet melon over a bitter Haze base: the breeder's description and the user reports on Cannalope Haze equally point to this combination. For the sativa, DNA Genetics crossed an Original Haze from Haze Brothers with a Mexican landrace and presented the result as a fast-flowering Haze line.
Aroma and Flavor:
DNA Genetics compared the taste to melon with a touch of Haze on top. In the user reports, cantaloupe melon recurs as the lead note, accompanied by tropical fruit and bright sweetness; individual consumers taste the melon as more earthy. In 2 grow reports the fruit is paired with citrus: with lemon in one, with lime, lemon and grapefruit in the other. Other strain descriptions add floral notes and apricot.
A strain description based on lab data and an article on the DNA Genetics website agree in naming myrcene as the dominant terpene, and both also list caryophyllene. The strain description adds humulene, the article limonene and terpinolene. One producer lists limonene, caryophyllene and myrcene as the main terpenes of its flowers.
Genetics and Origin:
Besides the spelling Cannalope Haze, Cantaloupe Haze and Cannalope Haze Premium are in use. At the IC420 Growers Cup 2005, the strain took 2nd place in the Sativa category of the Breeders Cup; an overview of the history of DNA Genetics also lists a 3rd place in the same category for 2004.
As a parent, Cannalope Haze appears several times in the DNA Genetics lineup: in Chocolope together with Chocolate Thai, in Cannalope Kush with OG #18 and in Cannadential with L.A. Confidential.
Effects:
Consumers mainly describe a stimulating effect with elevated mood, euphoria, creativity and focus, in some cases also giddiness and talkativeness. Others first noticed pronounced body relaxation, with the activation only following later; one report mentions couch lock, 2 mention drowsiness. The reports also disagree on potency, which some describe as very strong, others as weak and short-lasting.
Dry mouth and dry eyes are named as unwanted side effects, and occasionally also nervousness, slight paranoia and foggy thinking.
THC Content:
The published values are far apart. An article on the DNA Genetics website gives 20 to 28 % THC, and the same range appears in another strain description. A strain description based on lab data, by contrast, lists 14 % THC and 2 % CBG.
Cultivation:
In its original description, DNA Genetics presented the strain as a sativa that is finished after 8 weeks of flowering, with good yield and above-average output when making ice water hash. The breeder listed it only as regular seed, for indoor and outdoor cultivation. The more recent article on its website, by contrast, gives 9 weeks of flowering, 340 to 454 g/m² indoors and up to 567 g per plant outdoors, converted from 12 to 16 and 20 ounces respectively. It also gives the height, likewise converted, as 76 to 152 cm indoors and 102 to 203 cm outdoors; for outdoor growing it names a Mediterranean climate as preferred.
Community Experiences:
The grow reports evaluated come from indoor cultivation and give flowering times of 56 to 65 days; one reports harvest after 8 weeks. They agree on the flowers: hard, very compact and with little leaf mass relative to flower.
Observations on growth diverge. One grower describes bushy, stable plants with many strong side shoots, another a fir-tree shape growing from 25 cm at the start of flowering to around 110 cm, and a further one many long but thin shoots. The plants tolerated topping of the main stem well in 2 reports, 2 growers advise against heavy pruning, and 2 reports consider supports necessary during flowering.
Nutrient demand is called low in 2 reports; on whether the plants forgive feeding errors, they give opposite verdicts. Several growers consider the strain suitable for beginners and tolerant of temperature fluctuations; one who worked with a cutting, by contrast, calls for a well-controlled environment and rates the yield as slightly below average, while others call it high. One grower observed clear differences between phenotypes, including plants with indica-like leaves and conspicuously dense trichome coverage.
Versions from Different Breeders:
Alongside the original from DNA Genetics, a version from The Plant is described, which the supplier lists as an F2 of the DNA Genetics strain. The Plant lists it only as feminized, with 75 % sativa and 25 % indica, and gives about 63 days of flowering indoors, a height of 100 to 120 cm and a yield of 350 to 400 g/m² indoors and 500 to 550 g/m² outdoors.
