Chocolate Thai

Several user reports on Chocolate Thai come from consumers who know the strain from the 1980s and measure today's flowers against that memory. What they share with younger users is a reference to a coffee and chocolate flavor. Behind the name stands a sativa landrace from Thailand that appeared in the United States in the 1960s, at the time as so-called Thai sticks: flowers tied around a bamboo stick.

Community Experiences:

Flavor descriptions range from creamy coffee through mocha and cappuccino to sweet chocolate, occasionally supplemented by cookie notes and a floral hint. Accounts of the effects diverge. Some reports describe a clear, stimulating state with focus, creativity and talkativeness, others a euphoric, cheerful mood with physical relaxation. Several users found the strain clearly sedating despite its classification as a sativa, and one describes heavy eyelids and a more indica-like feeling.

The reports name dry mouth and dry eyes as accompanying effects. Strain descriptions additionally list paranoia, one of them also anxiety and occasional headaches.

Genetics and Origin:

There is no original breeder for the landrace. One strain description portrays the historical Thai sticks as slender and airy, medium to dark brown in color, with a scent of chocolate and coffee. Because the plants flowered for a long time, gave little yield and were hard to clone, strain descriptions consider it likely that the genetics no longer exist in their original form; one user report places their disappearance in the 1990s. According to one description, the breeder Dutch Flowers made the strain known, having obtained the material, by its own account, from growers in Hawaii.

Chocolate Thai appears as a parent in a number of more recent crosses. DNA Genetics crossed a mother plant designated OG Chocolate Thai with Cannalope Haze and backcrossed the result to shorten the flowering time. High Times named the resulting Chocolope Strain of the Year in 2007. Further offspring are Chocolate Thai Zkittlez by Riot Seeds, Chocolate Diesel by True Grit Genetics and Crippled Rhino by Stoney Girl Gardens.

Aroma and Flavor:

Besides coffee and chocolate, strain descriptions list nutty and spicy tones, along with herbs, tobacco, black pepper and a hint of vanilla. They give myrcene, caryophyllene and pinene as the main terpenes; another description names humulene and caryophyllene.

THC and CBD Content:

Strain descriptions put the THC content at 12 to 16 %; one gives 13.25 to 15.5 % THC and 0.15 to 0.32 % CBD. A single measurement from Massachusetts lies well above this: for a batch tested in 2026, the producer reported 30.47 % THCA, 27.25 % total THC, 1.5 % CBG, 0.2 % THCV and 0.00 % CBD. The terpene content of this batch was 1.52 %, with limonene, caryophyllene, myrcene and geraniol named. The information does not show how these plants relate to the historical landrace.

Cultivation:

One strain description gives 12 to 14 weeks of flowering for the landrace and an outdoor harvest in late October, along with warm, dry conditions. Outdoors, according to several descriptions, the strain only gave usable yields when the plants stood packed closely together, similar to fiber hemp. The Landrace Team, Dutch Flowers and Blim Burn Seeds describe slender, vigorous plants with wide internode spacing and leafy, airy to thin flowers. Not every observation fits this: one user report mentions dense flowers with orange hairs, and one strain description compares the small, dark buds to coffee beans.

Versions from Different Breeders:

• Dutch Flowers offers regular seeds and states around 98 days of flowering with low productivity.
• The Landrace Team lists the strain as Thai Chocolate and locates the material at the 19th parallel at 1500 to 2300 m altitude. The breeder states regular seeds, 11 to 14 weeks of flowering, medium yield and 150 to 200 cm for the longest phenotypes. Of 5 phenotypes, one smells of sweet, cooked chocolate; the breeder also describes coffee and cedar notes, low nutrient demand and a preference for a dry, sunny climate.
• SnowHigh Seeds backcrossed OG Chocolate Thai F2 and F3 with a Big Sur Holy Weed male, with a 75 % Chocolate Thai share according to the breeder. Regular seeds, around 74 days of flowering, sweet scent with a tropical touch.
• Blim Burn Seeds gives the same pedigree but offers the strain only as feminized. The breeder states 10 to 11 weeks of flowering, outdoor harvest in mid-October, 550 to 600 g/m² indoor, 600 to 800 g per plant outdoor and 18 to 22 % THC. The breeder describes the aroma as fruity and sour with a sweet chocolate background and notes that the strain can trigger anxiety in novice consumers or at larger amounts.
