Willy Wonka

Two different lineages circulate under the name Willy Wonka, and none of the sources reviewed clarifies which one is older. The best-documented version comes from the Spanish seed breeder Mr. Natural Seeds, a cross between the Katsu cut of Chocolate Trip and an inbred line of Cinderella 99. Alongside it, the strain is also listed as a cross of Sweet Tooth and Willie Nelson, for which no breeder is named.

Genetics and Origin:

According to Mr. Natural Seeds, Cinderella 99 was meant to shorten the long flowering time of Chocolate Thai, which enters the cross via Chocolate Trip. Chocolate Trip itself is listed in pedigree records as descending from Chocolate Thai and Indigo Diamond, while Cinderella 99 traces back to Princess and P94. The breeder aimed for a predominantly sativa-leaning plant that would also finish outdoors in cool, humid regions such as the mountain areas of northern Spain.

The line from Sweet Tooth and Willie Nelson is less well documented; one pedigree overview lists it only with reservation. Sweet Tooth is said to derive from Sweet Pink Grapefruit and Blueberry, Willie Nelson from Vietnamese Black and Highland Nepalese. Some strain descriptions blend both lineages and attribute this cross to Mr. Natural as well.

At the 2014 High Times Cannabis Cup in Denver, a butane extract labeled Willy Wonka Sativa BHO took 3rd place in the US concentrates category. The published results do not indicate which of the two lines the starting material came from.

Aroma and Flavor:

For its own version, Mr. Natural Seeds describes a sweet coffee scent, with vanilla and dark chocolate on the palate. Strain descriptions referring to the name in general list sweet, tropical, and sage-like notes, while others mention earthy tones with vanilla as well as mint, pine, and honey on the palate. One description, which states that its terpene data come from samples tested by certified labs, lists myrcene as the dominant terpene, followed by terpinolene and ocimene.

Effects:

User reports describe a euphoric, uplifting effect that increases focus and talkativeness. For its version, Mr. Natural Seeds describes a cheerful, clear, and energetic effect. Not all reports fit this picture: a few describe an initial physical heaviness that makes movement difficult, followed by a tingling sensation, while others mention fatigue. Reported side effects include dry mouth and dry eyes, as well as headaches.

THC Content:

Published figures diverge. Several strain descriptions state 18 to 24 % THC, while other overviews give significantly lower values. Mr. Natural Seeds does not give a number and classifies its version as THC-rich and low in CBD.

Cultivation:

Mr. Natural Seeds states an 8-week indoor flowering time for its version and an outdoor harvest in early October, along with medium height and a very high yield. Because of its vigor during the vegetative stage, the breeder considers the strain suitable for SCROG. The buds are described as airy, with low odor during flowering. Indoor, outdoor, and greenhouse cultivation are all mentioned. According to one cultivation description, cooler temperatures before flowering lead to purple streaks on the leaves and flowers.

One grow report documents a plant grown from seed of unknown origin in a 3 × 3-foot tent under LED light on coco substrate. In flowering weeks 5 to 6, it showed a dense, sticky layer of trichomes reaching onto the fan leaves, while the flowers were still narrow at that stage.

Versions from Different Breeders:

The Mr. Natural Seeds version (Chocolate Trip × C99) is available exclusively as feminized seed and, per the breeder, flowers in 8 weeks. According to pedigree records, the line from Sweet Tooth and Willie Nelson was never offered as feminized seed. Under the similar spelling Willie Wonka, Green Avenger Seeds offers a genetically distinct cross of Chocolate Wedding Cake and Chocolate Waffles; the provider states a flowering time of 7 to 8 weeks and 23 % THC.
