At the 2018 Karma Cup in Toronto, Grapefruit Haze took 3rd place in the category for sativa buds. The sample was not submitted by the breeder but by another participant. The cross of BC Grapefruit and Super Silver Haze was bred by Next Generation Seed Company, a Canadian seed company that, according to its own company description, was founded in 1997.
Genetics and Origin:
According to the strain descriptions, the pollen came from an F4-generation Grapefruit male, and the mother was a Super Silver Haze plant. The father's side was meant to supply grapefruit flavor and robustness, the Haze mother dense buds and a spicy tone. Super Silver Haze traces back to Green House Seeds and combines Haze with Skunk #1 and Northern Lights #5.
The sources disagree on classification. Next Generation Seed Company lists Grapefruit Haze as largely sativa-dominant, while another description sees a balanced hybrid and calls BC Grapefruit an indica.
The strain appears as a parent in several more recent crosses, including Ninja Fruit from Dojo Seed Co. with Grape Ape, Pomelo from Rheinland Genetics with Cinderella 99 and Mastodon Haze from Stillwater Genetics. The breeder itself used it for Hazy Daze Auto, an autoflowering line that also incorporated Amnesia Haze and ruderalis.
Aroma and Flavor:
Next Generation Seed Company describes the aroma as predominantly fruity, with a spicy component from the Haze line. Strain descriptions list grapefruit, citrus and pepper; one of them also names berries, grapes, herbs and diesel. In several reports, consumers mention grapefruit, in some cases with a peppery sharpness. Lavender, a lemony, almost sour note or earthy tones come up occasionally, and some found the smoke harsh. One grower compared the smell of the harvest to grapefruit peel.
Strain descriptions give myrcene as the dominant terpene, followed by pinene. Depending on the source, limonene or caryophyllene and humulene are added.
Effects:
The breeder speaks of a cerebral effect. The core of the user reports is an energizing, mood-lifting effect with a clear head and focus; creativity, silliness, talkativeness and heightened arousal are also mentioned.
Not everyone finds the strain light. Individual reports describe, alongside the head effect, a heaviness in the legs to the point of reluctance to move, or an energy drop once the first effect fades. Dry mouth and dry eyes appear as side effects, as do paranoia, anxiety, nervousness and dizziness.
THC and CBD Content:
The THC figures in strain descriptions vary widely: one gives 18 %, a second 8 to 19.5 %, a third 16 to 25 %. One description puts the CBD content at 0 %, another at under 1 %.
Cultivation:
For indoor cultivation, Next Generation Seed Company states 8 to 9 weeks of flowering; outdoors, according to the breeder, the plants are ready for harvest from mid to late October. Another strain description arrives at 65 days indoors and late October outdoors, and speaks of high yields under ideal conditions. The breeder itself describes a sturdy, robust plant that is not among the largest but still yields well.
An indoor grow documented in 2009 ran under a 600 W sodium vapor lamp after roughly 2 weeks of growth phase. The grower considered the flowering time of 50 days given by the vendor too short, expected 9 to 10 weeks and, due to external circumstances, harvested after 9 weeks, when the trichomes were still mostly clear to milky.
Versions from Different Breeders:
Next Generation Seed Company lists Grapefruit Haze exclusively as regular seed. Under the same name, a grower documented in 2024 the cultivation of an autoflowering variant from Quebec Cannabis Seeds; whether it traces back to the original breeder's cross is left open in the report.
