Clone line from British Columbia, widespread until the late 1980s; ancestry listed as an unknown hybrid, original breeder not documented; attempts at a seed version are considered to have failed.
Grapefruit
also known as BC Grapefruit, Canadian Grapefruit
Grapefruit traces back to a Canadian clone line, and seed versions from several breeders build on Cinderella 99. The strain is considered a parent of Zkittlez.
The only competition placement that can be tied directly to a version of Grapefruit is reported by Blimburn Seeds: according to the breeder, its seed line took 3rd place in the Outdoor category at Spannabis in 2011. The name became better known through an offspring. Zkittlez, now listed as The Original Z, is said to descend from Grape Ape and Grapefruit plus a further, undisclosed strain, and won 1st place at the Emerald Cup in 2016. Behind Grapefruit itself stand a Canadian clone line of unknown ancestry and several seed lines built on Cinderella 99.
Genetics and Origin:
The oldest trail leads to British Columbia. There, a Grapefruit passed on only as a clone was widespread until the late 1980s, and in the 1990s it circulated in Vancouver as BC Grapefruit. According to strain descriptions, breeder Steve of Spice of Life came across a clone whose label marked it as particularly worth growing. The parents of this line are not documented; one description suspects a Northern Lights #1 phenotype. Sources disagree on the relationship to Sweet Pink Grapefruit, which is considered in part the same clone and in part a cross of the original with another strain. Attempts to offer the clone line as seed are considered to have failed.
The seed lines build on Cinderella 99. Nectar Seeds crossed it with a fruity sativa and never released the result as feminized. Female Seeds documents its line in more detail: in 1998 a regular Grapefruit came about from a selected C99 clone, a Thai sativa and an autoflower strain meant to shorten flowering. The feminized version followed in 2003 with the founding of the company; Ferry selected the line distributed today in 2007 for scent and moderate height. One strain description names Nectar Seeds as originator of the cross and Positronic Seeds as breeder at the same time, so a clearly documented original breeder is missing.
As a parent, Grapefruit appears among others in Citrix and Citrus Chunk, in Blue Grape Dream by GreenLabel Seeds, in LeGrape by BlueHemp Switzerland and in ICED Grapefruit by Female Seeds.
Aroma and Flavor:
All versions are described by their grapefruit scent, often supplemented by pineapple. Nectar Seeds calls the smell very intense, and Ultra Genetics stresses a strong acidity. Female Seeds additionally lists lemongrass and sugar and describes the taste as sweet-and-sour, like pineapple and grapefruit. Other strain descriptions add sweet and tropical notes, Blimburn Seeds also berries. Consumers confirm the grapefruit taste, and a few perceive an earthy citrus note. Strain descriptions name myrcene as the dominant terpene in some cases and limonene in others; no analysis is available.
Effects:
Consumer reports describe a stimulating effect with energy, euphoria, good mood, creativity and focus. Several reports describe a slow onset in stages. Female Seeds, by contrast, characterizes its version as relaxing and calming, with a long-lasting head effect. In 2 grow reports on this line the effect is considered very strong and sedating. Dry mouth, dry eyes and headache are named as side effects.
THC and CBD Content:
Strain descriptions list Grapefruit with 19 % THC and 0 % CBD, and a supplier of flowers under this name reports the same values. Blimburn Seeds gives 15 to 19 % THC for its version.
Versions from Different Breeders:
- Female Seeds: feminized, around 56 days of flowering, yield rated by the breeder as very high, for indoor and outdoor.
- Blimburn Seeds: feminized, 70 % sativa and 30 % indica, 8 to 10 weeks of flowering, 400 g/m² indoors, 600 to 700 g per plant outdoors, outdoor harvest in October, resistant to pests and diseases according to the breeder.
- Ultra Genetics: by its own account a version of the Canadian Grapefruit, around 60 days of flowering, for indoor, outdoor and greenhouse; the buds can become so massive that mold becomes a problem outside warm regions.
- Nectar Seeds: sativa with a ripening time that is short for this type, released only as non-feminized seed.
- Fast Buds: Grapefruit'matic, also called Grapefruit Auto, crosses a sour citrus phenotype from Vancouver with ruderalis; feminized autoflower with 8 to 9 weeks from germination, 90 to 120 cm in height, 400 to 600 g/m² and 19 % THC.
Community Experiences:
2 indoor reports on the Female Seeds line document 58 and 64 days of flowering. One describes bushy growth with many side shoots and hard, compact buds; the plants had to be supported, topping before flowering is recommended there, and they tolerated heat well. On the calyx-to-leaf ratio the reports contradict each other: one rates it as very good, the other as somewhat below average. The latter, in turn, highlights very heavy resin coverage and a strong smell during cultivation and drying, but notes pre-flowering already in the vegetative phase and that not every phenotype develops the grapefruit aroma.
