Various origin stories circulate for Cat Piss, and they can hardly be reconciled. Several strain descriptions trace the strain back to a selected Super Silver Haze phenotype that was passed on only as a cutting. In addition, there are the Californian lines NorCal Cat Piss, which is linked to an Afghan landrace, and SoCal Cat Piss, which is said to descend from Trainwreck. The strain owes its name to a pungent smell that descriptions and user reports compare to ammonia and skunk.
Genetics and Origin:
The dates differ as well. 707 Seed Bank places its Catpiss in Pittsburg, California, where it is said to have emerged in the early 1990s and also become known as Pittsburg Piss. High Times magazine dates the strain to the mid-1990s. In the same article, James Loud announced a documentary that is meant to accompany the revival of the strain with the support of its original breeder; the breeder's name is not given. Loud emphasizes that the flavor was retained even in remnants that were only relit days later.
In newer crosses, Cat Piss serves as a parent. Jinxproof Genetics combined it with GSC for Cookie Puss, and Elev8 Seeds paired it with Grape Mountain for Cat Piss Canyon. For Show Time, Archive Seed Bank used the NorCal line together with Do-Si-Dos, and a producer from Maine crossed its own selection of the NorCal version from 707 Seed Bank with Purple Manguito from Piff Coast Seeds to make Cat Piff. According to a press report, Cheetah Piss in turn was named after Cat Piss but need not be related to it.
Aroma and Flavor:
Ammonia is the term that recurs most consistently in the descriptions, together with skunk and a pungent note that is in part reminiscent of gasoline. Pine and a sweetish component are also named; another strain description adds earthy and floral tones as well as a spicy sharpness. 707 Seed Bank attributes a skunky, soapy aroma to its version. One strain description names myrcene, caryophyllene and pinene as the defining terpenes; Elite Clone Seed Company additionally lists limonene and humulene.
In user reports, the flavor is received very differently. Some describe sweetness and floral notes at first, then earth and hay on the exhale. Part of the consumers appreciate the aroma, while others find it repellent.
Effects:
The consensus of the user reports is an energizing, mood-lifting effect with euphoria, focus, creativity and talkativeness; an arousing effect is also described. Individual consumers, by contrast, found the strain calming or tiring, and one report states that it kept the reporter awake for a long time. Reported side effects are dry mouth, dizziness, headaches, anxiety and paranoia, with anxiety mentioned mainly after larger amounts. One strain description adds dry eyes.
THC and CBD Content:
One strain description gives 17 % THC and 0 % CBD. For feminized versions, the breeders state their own values: Elite Clone Seed Company 20 to 23 % THC, Grower's Choice up to 20 % THC with less than 1 % CBD.
Cultivation:
According to the available descriptions, how demanding Cat Piss is to grow depends on the line. One strain description rates it as easy, attributes resistance to pests and mold to it and considers it suitable for warm climates but also viable in cooler conditions; outdoors, harvest is reported for late September to early October. The producer from Maine, by contrast, found the NorCal version from 707 Seed Bank difficult, with a compact habit and extremely short internodes.
Another strain description gives around 65 days of flowering for indoor cultivation and calls the strain suitable for indoors and outdoors. Without training, yields are said to be medium, and LST and SCROG are said to increase them. The buds are described there as rock-hard and cone-shaped, bright light green with dark green and lavender areas, long amber hairs and a dense resin coating.
Versions from Different Breeders:
The versions already differ widely in growth type. 707 Seed Bank, whose Catpiss according to pedigree data came from the cutting NorCal Catpiss and an unknown, predominantly indica-derived line, describes a pure indica with broad leaves, short, sturdy growth and sticky, resinous buds. The version is listed only as regular seed; the breeder states 6 to 8 weeks of flowering indoors and an outdoor harvest in mid to late October.
From Elite Clone Seed Company comes a feminized S1 version of unknown parentage with 8 to 9 weeks of flowering, medium-tall, stretching growth and medium yield. Grower's Choice describes its feminized, photoperiod version as a Super Silver Haze phenotype with a 75 % sativa share and tall growth, and states 55 to 65 days of flowering and up to 450 g/m² indoors as well as up to 550 g per plant outdoors.
