User reports on Cali Kush describe a quick onset of effects: first an uplifted mood, then a relaxed calm in which users say they remain responsive and mobile. What follows is disputed. Which plant is actually meant is disputed too, since several breeders sell lines with different lineages under the name, which also appears as California Kush and Kali Kush.
Community Experiences:
Some reports describe a two-stage course, first euphoric, then relaxed and at times sleepy. Others experienced the strain as stimulating, with creative ideas, talkativeness and a clear, focused head; one report cites a duration of effect of around 4 hours. Set against this is the experience that the effect faded as quickly as it set in, and one user said they could not switch off with this strain. Several accounts rate it as strong.
Dry mouth and dry eyes are mentioned as accompanying effects, along with dizziness, headaches, restlessness and paranoid thoughts, and in individual reports also a racing heart. Consumers describe the dried buds as so dense that they are hard to break up.
Genetics and Origin:
The best-documented line is the one from Sumo Seeds, who crossed Purps with L.A. Confidential; some strain descriptions specify the Purps side as Mendocino Purps. Sumo Seeds listed the result as California Kush, a feminized hybrid with 55 % indica and 45 % sativa, and has since discontinued the strain. Sensible Seeds continues the same cross under the name. Another strain description classifies the combination as 70 % sativa-dominant, contradicting both breeders.
Sumo Seeds also used California Kush as a parent of Sumo's OG Kush, crossed with an unspecified OG Kush hybrid.
Versions from Different Breeders:
For the original version, Sumo Seeds states 7 to 8 weeks of flowering, a growth height of 40 to 90 cm and a medium yield. According to the breeder, the plants initially grow narrow and only gain mass during flowering, and the foliage can take on blue to purple tones. Sensible Seeds states 7 to 9 weeks of flowering for its version, outdoor harvest in early October, 425 to 475 g/m² indoors and up to 250 g per plant outdoors, at a height of 70 to 100 cm indoors and 90 to 120 cm outdoors. The breeder describes large, compact buds with light green and bluish tones and rates cultivation as easy.
A distinct genetic line is the California Kush from Anesia Seeds, from Strawberry Kush and OG Kush, according to the breeder 90 % indica, with 7 to 8 weeks of flowering, 650 g/m² indoors, 550 g per plant outdoors and a height of 80 to 100 cm. 00 Seeds Bank, by its own account, combines California and Kush genetics into a compact plant with short internodes and broad leaves and states 500 to 550 g/m²; the strain data set flowering at around 9 weeks. The same breeder also offers a fast version with 45 to 50 days of flowering, outdoor harvest from 1 to 10 October, 400 to 500 g/m² and a height of 85 to 110 cm indoors, 180 to 230 cm outdoors, as well as an autoflowering variant.
The seed bank MSNL lists a Cali Kush as a cross of Original California and Skunk with 8 to 10 weeks of flowering and 500 to 600 g/m²; the plants are said to tolerate topping, LST and SCROG well.
Aroma and Flavor:
Several strain descriptions and Sensible Seeds combine a coffee note with fruity and citrus tones, spice, and earthy and woody hints; one description adds berries and tart citrus fruit. Sumo Seeds, by contrast, characterized its plant as floral with pepper and mint, with a fruity-minty flavor and a grape aftertaste. Anesia Seeds describes its version as sweet and lemony with hints of exotic fruits, 00 Seeds Bank its own with lemon, sweet ripe fruit and a fuel note.
Myrcene, caryophyllene and limonene are named as the defining terpenes. A compilation of averaged measurements without disclosed laboratory or sample size, however, places linalool and caryophyllene at the top.
THC and CBD Content:
Breeder figures vary widely because they describe different plants: Sensible Seeds states 13 to 15 % THC and a medium to high CBD content without a figure, Anesia Seeds 24 % THC and 2.8 % CBD, MSNL up to 18 % THC with under 1 % CBD, 00 Seeds Bank 22 % THC for the fast version, and Amsterdam Seeds Co. 24 % THC for a Cali Kush with no parent strains named. Strain descriptions without breeder attribution range from 13 to 19 % THC in one source to 21 % in another.
