The cross of Gorilla Glue #4 and Zkittlez, circulated as Gorilla Zkittlez, is now listed by Barney's Farm under the name Gorilla Z; the breeder calls the Zkittlez parent Original Z. Barney's Farm classifies the feminized hybrid as 60 % indica and 40 % sativa. Other breeders have their own versions as well, along with autoflower offshoots, and their specifications sometimes differ considerably.
Genetics and Origin:
For Gorilla Glue #4, pedigree records list a cross of Sour Dubb and Chem's Sister, which was subsequently crossed with Chocolate Diesel. Zkittlez is traced there to Grape Ape and Grapefruit plus an unknown third partner. This line was developed by Terphogz, a cannabis company from Mendocino County in California. In 2021 the confectionery maker Wrigley sued the company in a federal court in Chicago for trademark infringement; in the settlement of July 2023, Terphogz gave up the name Zkittlez and kept the designation The Original Z.
According to the breeder, Philosopher Seeds created the cross itself, using the #4 phenotype of Gorilla Glue, which is passed on only as a cutting. Gorilla Zkittlez appears as a parent in, among others, Rozzilla by Goodfellas Seeds (with Roxy), Gorilash by Silver River Seeds (with Sour Flash) and Blackberry Zkittlez by Freak Genetics (with Blackberry Hammer).
Versions from Different Breeders:
Even the specifications from Barney's Farm are inconsistent. The breeder's data sheet gives 55 to 65 days of flowering, 100 to 140 cm in height indoors and 140 to 180 cm outdoors, 700 to 800 g/m² indoors and 2000 to 2500 g per plant outdoors, with harvest in the 3rd to 4th week of September. The description text on the same page, by contrast, speaks of 8 to 9 weeks of flowering, a final height of up to 1.7 m and harvest readiness in early October. Other strain descriptions give 500 to 700 g/m² and 140 to 170 cm for this version.
- Philosopher Seeds: feminized, 8 to 9 weeks of flowering, outdoor harvest in early October, over 25 % THC, 500 to 600 g/m² indoors and 500 to 1000 g per plant outdoors
- Barney's Farm, Gorilla Z Auto: autoflower with BF Super Auto #1 as third parent, 75 to 80 days from seed to harvest, 25 % THC, 450 to 500 g/m² indoors at 80 to 100 cm in height
- Fast Buds, Gorilla Zkittlez Auto: autoflower based on Original Glue and Zkittlez, 25 % THC, 450 to 550 g/m² indoors, elsewhere up to 600 g/m²
- Semyanich: feminized, 55 to 65 days of flowering, 24 % THC
THC Content:
Barney's Farm currently lists 32 % THC for Gorilla Z. Other strain descriptions give 24 % for the same version, and another gives 20 % THC and 1 % CBG.
Lab Results:
No uniform ranking of terpenes emerges. An analysis of lab certificates from US dispensaries reports averages of limonene at 0.90 % ahead of beta-caryophyllene at 0.64 %, ocimene at 0.31 % and myrcene at 0.30 %. A Canadian producer, by contrast, lists beta-caryophyllene at 0.63 % and humulene at 0.57 % at the top for its greenhouse-grown flowers, with a total terpene content of at least 3 %. Strain descriptions list caryophyllene, limonene and myrcene as the dominant terpenes. The values vary by batch, cultivation and phenotype.
Aroma and Flavor:
Barney's Farm describes the strain as fruity, with berries and pine. Other strain descriptions emphasize gasoline and tropical fruit with a hint of chocolate, along with earthy notes, tar and tobacco. Grow reports mention a sweet, candy-like fruity smell; one grower compared a phenotype to a watermelon-flavored energy drink. Consumers also name pepper, blueberry, sweet orange in the aftertaste and hash-like notes.
Effects:
Consumption reports describe a relaxing effect with elevated mood, euphoria and a silly, cheerful note, and some also mention creativity with clear thoughts. Others report mainly physical heaviness up to couchlock, and drowsiness; a few found the strength overwhelming. Dry mouth is mentioned in several reports, along with dry eyes, headaches and dizziness.
Cultivation:
Strain descriptions rate cultivation as moderately difficult and name the strain as suitable for indoors and outdoors. How vigorously it stretches after the switch to 12/12 is shown by a documented hydroponic grow in an NFT system: in the first 2 weeks of flowering the plants gained 10 to 12 cm every 3 days and doubled their height, and after 9 weeks of flowering they measured 151 cm. The buds became rock hard, the smell during flowering was strong, and around 150 g of dried flower per plant was collected.
A soil grow with 4 plants in 20-litre pots relied on topping, LST and a SCROG net. The plants grew compactly with short internodes, resembled one another, turned purple in cool nights and showed deficiency symptoms at half the fertilizer dose; wet, they weighed between 600 and 1100 g. In another soil grow, flowering was complete after about 60 days, the plants reached 100 to 115 cm and split into 2 phenotypes. Other growers report dense flowers with light purple tones, red leaves in the last weeks and trouble-free training with LST.
