Cross of Gelato and Wonderbrett's own OG Kush cut from 1996. A 2021 company portrait dates the handover of the OG Kush cutting to Brett Feldman to 1997. In a 2022 interview, Feldman mentions that European rappers reference the strain in their lyrics. No cultivation or potency figures from the breeder.
Black Orchid
Black Orchid is an indica-dominant cross of Gelato and OG Kush from the Californian brand Wonderbrett, which European seed banks also offer in their own versions.
Black, as the name might suggest, describes the flowers of Black Orchid in only some of the descriptions. One strain description depicts olive-green buds whose purple runs almost black in places, while a reviewer in 2020 saw purple, green, and reddish hues. Other reports speak of light green or moss-green flowers with long orange hairs. The indica-dominant cross of Gelato and OG Kush comes from the Californian brand Wonderbrett. Seeds under the same name are offered by Original Sensible Seeds and Zamnesia, without referencing Wonderbrett.
Community Experiences:
Consumption reports give a fairly consistent picture of the effects. Users describe a relaxing, physically heavy effect that sets in slowly and later turns into drowsiness. Several reviewers mention good mood and a tingling sensation at the start, giggliness in company, plus hunger or heavy eyelids. One tester found the head clear at first and only felt the sedating effect after about 30 minutes.
By contrast, an author who reviewed Wonderbrett flowers in 2021 called the strain more functional and usable during the day. Dry mouth appears repeatedly as a side effect, along with coughing when smoking; one report links dizziness to a larger amount. Strain descriptions additionally list dry eyes and anxious tension.
Aroma and Flavor:
Wonderbrett describes the scent as sweet citrus candy and fresh flowers, accompanied by earthy pine and a hint of gas. The reviews confirm pine and fruity kush notes but in some cases go well beyond that. One tester smelled spicy notes reminiscent of root beer and black licorice and tasted pepper when inhaling. Another found rubber, perfume, and wintergreen, with baby powder and creamy sweetness on the finish. One consumption report describes the smell as more Chemdawg-like and meaty, with the citrus note only emerging later; another calls the aroma cheesy and citrusy.
The seed banks set different accents: Original Sensible Seeds speaks of creamy blueberry pie, ripe wild berries, and citrus, while Zamnesia mentions citrus fruit with notes of blue cheese and butter. For terpenes, one strain description names limonene, myrcene, and caryophyllene, another caryophyllene, limonene, and humulene. Original Sensible Seeds lists myrcene ahead of pinene and caryophyllene for its version.
Genetics and Origin:
Wonderbrett was founded by Brett Feldman and Cameron Damwijk, whose name is closely tied to the spread of OG Kush in California. As Black Orchid's parents, the brand names Gelato and its own OG Kush cut from 1996. A 2021 company profile, however, dates the handover of the cutting to Feldman to 1997. Strain descriptions state 70 % indica and 30 % sativa. In a 2022 interview, Feldman mentioned that European rappers reference the strain in their lyrics.
THC and CBD Content:
Reviews of Wonderbrett flowers from 2020 and 2021 give THC values between 22.7 and 27.37 %; one of them also states 0.05 % CBD. The texts do not indicate where these figures come from, and they apply only to the batch reviewed in each case. Strain descriptions state either 18 to 20 % or 27 % THC.
