Banana OG
Banana OG traces back to the breeder OrgnKid and is described for its aroma of overripe bananas with the fuel tone typical of OG; several breeders offer their own versions.
Breeders, strain descriptions and consumers compare the smell of Banana OG to overripe bananas; depending on the source, candied banana, vanilla cream and pepper are added, with the fuel-like tone of the OG Kush family underneath. OrgnKid is regarded as the original breeder. According to this account, a Ghost OG was crossed with a banana-scented phenotype from Sagarmatha's 60/40 line. Several breeders now offer their own versions, not all with the same lineage.
Genetics and Origin:
OrgnKid is said to have won the seeds from which the banana plant emerged in an online auction. In this telling, the plants stayed short and stocky, had conspicuously thin branches and smelled intensely of banana. Where this parent comes from is not consistently reported: besides the Sagarmatha line, a statement by OrgnKid circulates that the banana plant was an old cross of Skunk #1 and Haze from their own breeding. Simplified pedigrees list the strain as OG Kush × Banana or as a cross of Banana Kush and OG Kush.
Several lines trace back to the original cut. Zoolander Seeds states that it received a pack of original seeds in the San Fernando Valley in 2008, and Clone Quest selfed the OrgnKid cut into an S1 line. Humboldt Seed Company relies on a clone from California's Emerald Triangle from 2010, obtained in Trinidad and brought into seed form through selfing and backcrossing. As a parent, Banana OG is found among others in Banana Punch, Banana Runtz and Banana Jack OG from Subcool's The Dank.
Aroma and Flavor:
Besides banana, descriptions mention tropical and earthy notes as well as pine; one producer speaks of candied banana with a creamy, gassy finish. Cinnamon and a dry floral spiciness are additionally attributed to the original cut. Humboldt Seed Company describes its own version as banana taffy with fuel notes on the exhale.
A detailed grow report on the Humboldt version paints a different picture: on the fresh plant, incense, pine, pepper and sandalwood dominated, while melon, papaya and banana peel were only faint and noticeable mainly during the dark phase. Banana bread emerged only after curing; when vaporized, pepper, spice and fuel came in, with banana bread in the aftertaste. Consumers also perceive the banana differently: some find it distinct, one report misses it entirely, another describes a sweet note with berries.
Effects:
Consumers describe relaxation, euphoria and good mood; several reports mention heavy eyelids, hunger and a tiredness that can go as far as falling asleep. Others found the strain rather stimulating and talkative, a few also focused or creative. A delayed onset is mentioned repeatedly. Humboldt Seed Company classes its own version as sativa-dominant and describes a physically relaxing yet activating effect. Dry mouth, dry eyes and dizziness are named as side effects; individual reports mention headaches, nervousness and brief paranoia, the grow report ringing in the ears.
THC and CBD Content:
One strain description gives an average from lab tests of 21.36 % THC, 0.14 % CBD and 0.54 % CBG, a clearly THC-dominant ratio. For the terpene profile, the same source lists limonene at 0.6 %, followed by myrcene (0.34 %), caryophyllene (0.27 %) and pinene (0.12 %); a second overview also names limonene, caryophyllene and myrcene as the defining terpenes. A producer citing the OrgnKid cut reports 27.4 % THC for its flowers, without naming a lab or a test date.
Versions from Different Breeders:
The breeders' figures differ markedly in lineage, seed type and flowering time:
- Humboldt Seed Company: feminized, from Banana OG clone, S1 #21 and Bx3; according to the breeder 55 to 65 days of flowering, outdoor harvest from October 1 to 10, an average of 25 % THC, resistant to powdery mildew and mold.
- Humboldt Seed Company, Banana OG Auto: autoflowering, crossed with Mint Jelly Auto, 11 to 12 weeks total duration, 25 % THC.
- Apothecary Genetics: regular, OG male × Banana, predominantly indica, 7 to 8 weeks of flowering, outdoor harvest in late September, 350 to 400 g/m².
- Flavour Chasers: feminized, OG Kush × Skunk Haze, 70 % indica, 8 to 10 weeks, 23 to 27 % THC.
- Zoolander Seeds: regular, continued breeding of the original seeds at F3, around 65 days.
- Clone Quest: feminized S1 of the OrgnKid cut, around 67 days, according to the breeder particularly high-yielding toward the end of flowering.
Geistgrow is named as another supplier.
Cultivation:
A detailed indoor report with 5 plants is available for the Humboldt version; the plants grew so uniformly that the authors compared them to clones. After the switch to 12 hours of light they stretched from 17 inches (about 43 cm) to 53 to 55 inches (about 135 to 140 cm), a good three times their height. The flowers became extremely dense and resinous, the stems stayed weak despite added silicon, and from day 33 of flowering supports were needed. The report recommends SCROG as a training method. The smell during flowering stayed subdued.
Because of the dense flowers, the authors feared gray mold, kept humidity below 52 to 55 % and harvested in stages on days 49, 55, 60 and 65. Powdery mildew and mites did not appear, but from day 53 numerous tiny hermaphroditic flower sites formed, too late to harm the harvest. The yield was 4.5 to 5.5 ounces (about 128 to 156 g) of dried flowers per plant. The authors used supplements at only 40 to 60 % of the recommended amount.
One strain description rates cultivation as easy and names a warm, somewhat humid climate with daytime temperatures around 70 °F (around 21 °C); it describes the flowers as dense, sticky, in part spade-shaped and with a golden-yellow sheen.
