Sour lemon over a heavy diesel note: that is where descriptions of Kali Dog converge, whether they come from the breeder Royal Queen Seeds or from user reports. The feminized variety is a sativa-leaning cross with Sour Diesel as one parent. Which plant contributed the other half of the genetics is answered differently depending on the source.
Aroma and Flavor:
Royal Queen Seeds adds skunk, herbs, an earthy undertone and a sharp pungency to citrus and diesel. According to a blog post by the breeder, the citrus note comes first in the smoke, while diesel takes over on the exhale. Another strain description additionally mentions blue cheese and lists limonene as the dominant terpene, followed by caryophyllene and myrcene.
Two reviews from growers mention a sweet smell and sweet smoke, respectively. Another report notes that the flavor only shows fully with careful drying and storage.
Genetics and Origin:
On the current strain page of Royal Queen Seeds, Kali Dog is listed as Chemdawg × Sour Diesel. The blog post mentioned, from 2020, names OG Kush and Sour Diesel instead, and this combination also appears in several other strain descriptions. On its origin, the breeder says only that the genetics trace back to breeders in the USA and came about more than 20 years ago.
The figures for the ratio of sativa to indica also differ; Royal Queen Seeds itself gives 55 % sativa and 45 % indica. In places the strain is listed under the spellings Cali Dog and Cali Dawg. By its own account, the breeder has scaled back production in order to preserve the phenotype.
Effects:
The breeder describes a clear, uplifting onset in the head, a euphoric mood and physical relaxation; the blog post adds motivation, creativity and mental focus. User reports set similar emphases and mention drive, creativity, sociability and silliness. One report describes a balanced effect without couch-lock, another one sleepy effects. Two reports highlight the strength. Dry mouth, dry eyes and dizziness are named as side effects.
THC and CBD Content:
Royal Queen Seeds states up to 18 % THC and describes the CBD content as low. Another strain description gives a range of 17 to 26 % THC without naming a measurement.
Cultivation:
For flowering, the breeder allows 55 to 65 days; outdoors, harvest time is the end of October, and the breeder names regions with long summers as the climate. Indoors, 450 to 500 g/m² are said to be possible, outdoors 500 to 550 g per plant, with plant heights of 90 to 160 cm indoors and 175 to 210 cm outdoors. Other strain descriptions deviate from these values for flowering time, height and yield.
Royal Queen Seeds rates the difficulty as moderate. The dense, compact buds tend toward bud rot and mold in high humidity, which is why the breeder suggests indoor cultivation in humid regions. Outdoors, according to the blog post, the plant grows tall and stretches noticeably, while indoors it stays shorter and bushier; with limited space, topping or cutting back may be necessary. Nutrient demand is considered high; according to the breeder, the strain tolerates strong bloom fertilizers well.
Community Experiences:
One report speaks of large, heavily frosted buds, another of healthy plants. Two reviews describe cultivation as easy, which contradicts the breeder's rating; another report, by contrast, confirms the tendency toward mold. In one case the seeds germinated slowly and the plants developed hesitantly. One report describes a purple-colored phenotype whose smell recalled gasoline and paint.
