Maple Leaf Indica

You will look in vain for two named parent strains in Maple Leaf Indica. Sensi Seeds lists the strain as a pure Indica from Afghan source material from the area around Mazar-i-Sharif, which the breeder stabilized by backcrossing to the traits of the ancestors. The breeder links the line to the hashish for which Mazar-i-Sharif was known and presents it as a heavily resinous plant for hashish makers.

Genetics and Origin:

According to Sensi Seeds, a collector brought the direct ancestors out of Afghanistan shortly before the Soviet invasion. The same plants later went into several of the breeder's hybrids and, according to Sensi Seeds, passed on the short flowering time, the heavy trichome production and their growth structure. On the page for a more recent strain, Sensi Seeds calls Maple Leaf Indica a descendant of the Hindu Kush landrace; other strain descriptions likewise place it in the Hindu Kush or simply name Afghani as a parent. One single description, by contrast, lists Skunk #1 and BlueBlack as parents, without any other reviewed source supporting this.

As a parent, the strain is documented several times. Sweet Seeds crossed it with Blue Black and White Rhino for Cream Caramel. In Cereal Killa by Sensi Seeds it is present through a cross with Cereal Milk, which was combined with RS54 x Coffin Candy.

Aroma and Flavor:

The breeder names citrus notes with hints of orange or grapefruit, a sweetness reminiscent of caramel, a buttery aftertaste and an earthy base note. Other strain descriptions speak of a sweet, slightly citrusy taste and a scent of incense, along with honey and butter; myrcene is listed there as the dominant terpene, followed by pinene and caryophyllene. User reports mostly pick up on sweetness and honey. One grower found the plants very lemony, while another report describes honey with pine and a hint of gasoline. Several reports mention notes of maple syrup or pancakes, whereas others note that the strain does not literally taste of maple syrup.

Effects:

Sensi Seeds describes a distinctly physical effect with a feeling of heaviness that can lead into deep sleep. In the personal accounts, relaxation and drowsiness come first, combined with a tingling in the body, with euphoria or giddiness. Some report barely getting up from the sofa; others found the effect rather stimulating, with creative or talkative traits. Reported side effects are dry mouth, dry eyes and headache, in isolated cases dizziness and a scratchy throat.

THC and CBD Content:

Several strain descriptions give THC values between 15 and 21 %. Providers of feminized versions state their own values, which apply only to their respective seeds: Crop King Seeds 18 % THC and 0.70 % CBD, Homegrown Cannabis Co. up to 20 % THC and less than 1 % CBD, Original Harvest Seeds 19 % THC and 2 % CBD.

Cultivation:

According to Sensi Seeds, the strain flowers for 45 to 50 days. The breeder describes compact plants with large leaves and heavy, resin-covered flowers that suit indoor and outdoor cultivation; outdoors, according to the breeder, the strain needs a warm, sunny climate with a long summer. Indoors, the breeder names Sea of Green as a method to increase yield. Sensi Seeds rates the yield as high but concedes that other Afghan strains deliver more; for resin production the breeder sees Maple Leaf Indica ahead. According to Sensi Seeds, the strain largely forgives cultivation mistakes, yet the breeder still advises checking for pests.

The documented indoor grows differ from this description in growth. One report describes fir-shaped plants; both describe pronounced stretching after the start of flowering: in one grow the plant went from 25 to 70 cm over 58 days of flowering, with the stretch given as 180 %; in the other it went from 20 to 60 cm over 45 days of flowering, at roughly 200 % stretch. The dried flowers are described as hard and compact. One of the growers attests low fertilizer demand, insensitivity to mold and temperature fluctuations, and cuttings that had rooted after 10 to 15 days.

Two outdoor reports from the USA note that the plants gave off hardly any smell during flowering; one describes them as low and stocky. Two growers report differences between plants grown from seed, once in flavor and once in effect.

Versions from Different Breeders:

Sensi Seeds lists Maple Leaf Indica exclusively as regular seed. Feminized versions under the name Maple Leaf come from other providers, which do not refer to Sensi Seeds and state longer flowering times: Crop King Seeds and Homegrown Cannabis Co. 8 to 10 weeks each, Original Harvest Seeds 55 to 65 days. Crop King Seeds classes its version as an indica-dominant hybrid of Afghani, gives 200 g/m² indoors and 200 g per plant outdoors, and names late September to early October as the outdoor harvest time. Homegrown Cannabis Co. describes a pure Indica from Afghani x Afghani with short growth, Original Harvest Seeds a pure Indica from the Hindu Kush with yields of up to 200 g/m² indoors and up to 200 g per plant outdoors. A retailer description also attributes feminized seeds to Sensi Seeds, while the breeder itself lists the strain only as regular.
