Afghan and Jamaican genetics plus 2 Kush lines: White Label assembles the pedigree of Purple Bud from these building blocks. The breeder crossed an Afghan-Jamaican hybrid with a Kush cross whose Hindu Kush was bred in the Netherlands and whose Purple Kush comes from California. The feminized strain is distributed through Sensi Seeds. An independent strain description also traces Purple Bud back to Sensi Seeds and sees it as an Indica of Afghan descent, to which a distant Jamaican Sativa ancestor lends somewhat more height and a stimulating note.
Genetics and Origin:
How detailed the pedigree is depends on the source. In an overview of purple strains, Sensi Seeds names only the Afghan-Jamaican line and Californian Purple Kush, while another strain description limits the parents to Purple Kush and Afghani. White Label classifies the strain as an Indica with a Sativa share; other strain descriptions put the Indica share at 75 %. As a parent, Purple Bud is documented in T Dub, a cross with A-Dub whose breeder is not known.
Versions from Different Breeders:
A different genetic background lies behind the Purple Bud from Seedsman. It comes from Oregon, resembles Skunk #1 in structure and growth according to Seedsman, and is available only as regular seed. The breeder states 9 weeks of flowering, a harvest in early October at higher latitudes and up to 20 % THC.
For Purple Bud Automatic, White Label crossed Ruderalis into its own feminized strain and gives 8 to 10 weeks of flowering, a total cycle of about 14 weeks and a height of 90 to 140 cm. Auto Purple Bud from Panoramix Genetics is a separate line, which one strain description presumably traces back to Purple Haze and an unnamed Ruderalis. Panoramix Genetics states 9 to 10 weeks of flowering, a height of 50 to 100 cm, 300 to 400 g/m² indoors and 25 to 65 g per plant.
Aroma and Flavor:
White Label describes an earthy scent with herbal sweetness and a hint of blueberry, and a flavor of sweet notes with some spice and pine. For the Automatic version the breeder names pine and sandalwood with a fruity undertone. Other strain descriptions add lavender and pepper. In a grow report the ground material smelled sweetish and fruity; for the Seedsman version a grower noted a peppery sandalwood note after curing. One strain description lists myrcene, caryophyllene and limonene as the predominant terpenes; Sensi Seeds highlights myrcene and caryophyllene.
Effects:
According to White Label, the effect begins uplifting and then shifts into deep relaxation. In user reports the relaxing, at times sleep-inducing side dominates. Euphoria, elevated mood, creativity and focus are also mentioned, and in isolated cases an initial burst of energy with a lasting body effect. Other consumers found the effect weak and rather meditative. Dry mouth, dry eyes and dizziness are named as side effects.
THC and CBD Content:
An analysis of lab-tested products of this strain yields 12 % THC and 0 % CBD. A manufacturer's figure for pre-rolls is considerably higher at 19.2 % THC with 0 % CBD, a single value. Levels vary with batch, cultivation and phenotype.
Cultivation:
White Label rates Purple Bud as suitable for beginners and gives about 9 weeks of flowering. Outdoors the breeder expects the harvest in northern England in October. The strain is said to suit indoor and outdoor cultivation, temperate and continental climates as well as cool regions. According to the breeder, the plant stays compact, sets short internodes and forms dense, angular buds with a thick resin coating at high yield; for indoor cultivation White Label names Sea of Green and SCROG.
The color that gives the strain its name cannot be counted on. According to the breeder, leaves and buds turn purple at lower temperatures, but individual plants stay green. One strain description claims, by contrast, that the coloring appears even without cold.
Community Experiences:
Several grow reports confirm easy cultivation, including an outdoor grow without additives in which the buds turned purple. Otherwise the reports on color diverge. In an indoor grow with a 30-day vegetative phase and 70 days of flowering, 2 of 6 plants turned purple, and the harvest was about 12 ounces dried. Another grower saw only 1 of 5 plants change color, after cold nights; a third names temperatures below 23 °C as a precondition. In other reports the purple did not appear at all.
Flowering time in individual reports was 61, 62 and 65 days. One grower describes rock-hard, compact buds on the side shoots as well, which had to be supported. Another indoor report paints the opposite picture: strong stretching, an unfavorable bud-to-leaf ratio with a laborious harvest, only small, elongated side buds after topping and an actual ripening time of 9 to 10 weeks. Reports contradict each other on susceptibility to mold. An outdoor grower described the Seedsman version as robust against temperature swings and fungal attack, with hard buds that turned dark green after drying.
