RedBull is best known as a cross of Skunk #1 and Ed Rosenthal Super Bud from La Plata Labs; other strains from different breeders also circulate under this name.
Behind the name RedBull are several strains that trace back to quite different parent strains. The best documented is the cross of Skunk #1 and Ed Rosenthal Super Bud from La Plata Labs. Other seed banks list Red Bull as plants from Afghani and Skunk #11, or from Headbanger #6 and Cola Cubez, and Red Bullz from Compound Genetics also sometimes circulates under this name.
La Plata Labs is a group of breeders from the La Plata Mountains in Colorado. According to their own account, they crossed a selected phenotype of Super Bud with a Skunk plant whose potency and aroma they particularly emphasize for RedBull. The breeder's stated goal was a strain with very high yield without sacrificing quality. La Plata Labs classifies the result as 75 % indica and 25 % sativa, placing it on the indica side.
Lineage records trace both parents back to Sensi Seeds. Skunk #1 is said to contain Afghan indica along with Colombian and Mexican sativa; Super Bud traces, via Ed's PEHT, back to lines from Afghanistan, the Hindu Kush, Mexico, Thailand, and Africa. Besides the spelling Red Bull, the names Red Bull Kush and Red Bull OG are also in use.
La Plata Labs states a flowering time of 63 to 70 days and rates the yield as high. According to the breeder, the strain can be grown indoors and outdoors. Seeds were only available in regular form; no feminized variant existed.
One strain description depicts small, popcorn-shaped buds in neon green with a deep purple undertone, bright orange hairs, and a dense, white trichome coating.
According to the breeder, the smell is dominated by skunk, from which citrus notes emerge, with a musky note remaining in the aftertaste. Another strain description adds earthy, pungent tones and herbs; for flavor it names sour, spicy lemon and a savory skunky note on the exhale. A further one lists plum, nut, and citrus, and identifies myrcene as the predominant terpene ahead of pinene and caryophyllene.
La Plata Labs describes RedBull as a strain that makes users alert and focused. Experience reports diverge. Some consumers describe a clear, energetic state with good focus that they experienced during the day and that lasted for several hours; one report speaks of 6 to 7 hours. Others describe mainly relaxation to the point of sleepiness and a heavy body feeling in the evening. One strain description also classifies the effect, contrary to what the name suggests, as more calming with a clear head.
As side effects, the reports name dry mouth and dry eyes, in individual cases anxiety and paranoia, and once also sweating. One strain description additionally mentions an increased heart rate.
The published content figures do not match. One strain description lists RedBull at 6 % THC and 9 % CBD. Crop King Seeds and Sonoma Seeds name exactly these values for their Red Bull made from Afghani and Skunk #11. Other descriptions of the La Plata Labs cross assume a significantly higher THC content.
Crop King Seeds and Sonoma Seeds list a feminized, indica-dominant Red Bull from Afghani and Skunk #11. Both state a flowering time of 8 to 9 weeks, an indoor height of 5 to 8 feet (152 to 244 cm), and an outdoor height from 8 feet (244 cm) upward. According to their information, the outdoor harvest falls in late September to early October, with temperate or Mediterranean conditions named as the climate.
Sour Genetics offers a regular, photoperiod Red Bull from Headbanger #6, a strain from Karma Genetics, and Cola Cubez, likewise with a flowering time of 8 to 9 weeks. Red Bullz from Compound Genetics originated from Grape Gas and White Runtz and was released in 2022.
