Somango, formerly Soma #5, is an indica-dominant strain from Soma Seeds made from Jack Herer and Big Skunk Korean, named after its mango aroma.
Blimburn Seeds credits its version of Somango with 1st place in the Hybrid category at the Cannabis Cup 2013. The title cannot be verified: Soma Seeds, the original breeder, claims first prize at the High Times Cannabis Cup 2013 in Amsterdam for a different strain of its own, SomaRi, a cross of New York City Diesel, Buddha's Sister and Kushadelic. Somango also does not appear in the lists of Cup wins by Soma Seeds, which begin with Reclining Buddha in 1999. The strain, formerly listed as Soma #5, owes its name to its mango aroma.
Soma Seeds classes Somango as 75 % indica-dominant. The sources disagree on the parents: the description of the Soma version names Big Skunk Korean and Jack Herer, while other accounts of the same line add Super Skunk as a third parent. Suppliers of their own versions in turn name other combinations, Gea Seeds for instance Jack Herer and Big Skunk, Blimburn Seeds Super Skunk and Jack Herer. According to its own account, ApeOrigin obtained its line by selfing a cutting of Soma genetics.
Soma Seeds has continued to breed the strain itself: Somango Pineapple resulted from a cross with Lavender and, according to the breeder, is 80 % indica-dominant.
Ripe mango shapes every description, accompanied by sweet and tropical notes. ApeOrigin adds papaya and speaks of a very strong smell, Seedsman names pine resin, Gea Seeds strawberry. Consumer reports also mention lemon and cream; some consumers perceive the mango less distinctly in the smoke than on the nose. One strain description lists pinene as the dominant terpene, followed by myrcene and limonene.
Soma Seeds describes the effect as euphoric and mentally stimulating, leaving one alert. Seedsman stresses that it does not keep you on the couch. Consumer reports describe a relaxed mood in which concentration remains possible, along with good spirits and euphoria, at times also silliness and talkativeness. Others find the strain more sleep-inducing. As side effects, consumers name dry mouth, dry eyes and dizziness, in individual reports also headache, inner restlessness and paranoia.
Strain descriptions give 20 % THC and less than 1 % CBD for Somango, one of them additionally 1 % CBG. Among the breeders, Blimburn Seeds states 16 to 21 % THC and Gea Seeds 18 % THC for their respective versions.
For the Soma version, the breeder gives 9 to 10 weeks of flowering and recommends indoor cultivation in soil with organic fertilization. Because of the long side shoots and the rather tall growth, Soma Seeds advises growing the plant with several main shoots, and the height has to be controlled in the process. Bulk Seed Bank describes leaves that turn purple toward the end of ripening and buds with a dense resin coating.
Documented indoor grows reached 60 to 75 days of flowering. The plants turned out differently. One grower describes a compact, indica-like phenotype that grew from 20 to 45 cm and tolerated high temperatures without problems, another bushy plants with long, strong side shoots. In a further report, one plant reached a height of 60 cm after 60 days of flowering and yielded about 30 g of dried flower under a 400 W lamp; at night temperatures around 18 °C it turned purple. The dried buds are described as firm and compact, with an above-average share of flower relative to leaf mass. The reports disagree on fertilization: one credits the strain with tolerance of over- and underfertilization, another the opposite. The summary of the grow reports rates it as suitable for beginners.
