According to Green House Seeds, a genetic anomaly occurs in 3 to 5 % of Alaskan Ice plants: affected specimens flower slowly and set hardly any flower clusters. The breeder therefore describes its cross of White Widow and Haze as not fully stable and aims the strain at seasoned growers who secure every plant with a cutting and select deliberately. Green House Seeds withdrew the seeds from its range for 2 years. According to the breeder, they returned because growers and hashish makers kept asking for them; the breeder emphasizes the strain's suitability for hashish and ice water extraction.
Cultivation:
Green House Seeds describes tall, heavily branching plants and recommends SCRoG or LST. Indoors the breeder gives 9 weeks of flowering and up to 800 g/m²; outdoors in the Northern Hemisphere it gives a harvest up to the 1st week of October with up to 1000 g per plant. Another strain description lists plant heights of up to 2.5 m for outdoor cultivation. While the breeder reserves the strain for seasoned growers, a further description rates it as easy to grow.
The documented indoor grows do not paint a uniform picture. In one, the plant stretched from around 35 to around 130 cm after the start of flowering, an increase of about 271 % as stated by the grower. It grew vigorously but slowly and produced only a few short side shoots; harvest came after 77 days. The other report describes rapid vegetative growth, strong stretching and many side shoots. There, flowering was finished after 65 days, though the grower considers up to 10 weeks possible. The two reports describe the dried buds as hard and compact and the yield as very high.
Genetics and Origin:
Green House Seeds names its in-house White Widow and Haze as parents; the breeder gives the ratio as 70 % sativa to 30 % indica. One strain description identifies the Haze parent as Original Haze from Cultivators Choice and points to phenotypes ranging from sativa-dominant to indica-dominant expression. Jordan of the Islands crossed Alaskan Ice with Blueberry to create Blue Ice.
Aroma and Flavor:
The breeder description, which a strain description reproduces, places the spicy, Haze-influenced aroma between the two parent strains. Other descriptions list nut, sweet chestnut and mint, plus earth and wood, sour and hashish-like notes, and pine in the flavor. Consumers report a sweet, earthy smell with menthol, in some cases also spicy or fruity hints; one found the taste mild and nutty. Strain descriptions name caryophyllene, myrcene and limonene as the defining terpenes in varying order, and one adds humulene.
Effects:
Green House Seeds describes a fast onset, cerebral at first, then with growing physical heaviness. User reports describe an uplifted, euphoric mood, creativity and focus, as well as talkativeness and giggling. One consumer names energy without restlessness; other reports mention physical relaxation with a clear head. One grow report gives an assessment of a relaxing, meditative effect that is at the same time slightly confusing and long-lasting. By contrast, one consumer found the effect weak and short. Reports name dry mouth as a side effect; strain descriptions add dry eyes and paranoia.
