Haze x White Widow, 60 % sativa according to the strain page; outdoor harvest mid to late October (northern hemisphere).
Moby Dick is a cross of Haze and White Widow from Dinafem that stretches strongly in flowering; Green House Seeds and Barney's Farm also list their own versions.
Anyone growing Moby Dick needs room above and to the side. For the cross of Haze and White Widow, Dinafem states up to 3.5 m in height and 1500 g of yield per plant outdoors, and 650 g/m² indoors after 60 to 70 days of flowering. Because the plants stretch strongly in height and width after the switch to flowering, the breeder advises limiting the vegetative phase to 3 weeks. According to Dinafem, the strain reached the market in 2005 and became the company's first major sales success.
Documented grows of the Dinafem version show a height gain of roughly 67 to 120 % after the start of flowering. One outdoor plant that already measured over 100 cm before flowering ended at 202 cm. Indoors, harvests took place after 60 and after 64 days of flowering. The reports describe a strong main stem, many sturdy side branches with thick flowers, and hard, compact buds with a high flower-to-leaf ratio. The plants tolerated topping the main stem well in 2 reports.
Reports on support needs contradict each other. Dinafem considers the branches sturdy enough to manage without stakes, whereas an outdoor grower recommends nets or bamboo canes from the late growth phase onward. The high nutrient demand is described consistently: the breeder rates cultivation as easy but calls the strain very demanding regarding light and fertilizer, and growers observed little tolerance of over- and underfertilization.
According to Dinafem, the plant is resistant to humidity and mold, and no mold occurred in the evaluated grows of the Dinafem version. For outdoor harvest in the northern hemisphere, the breeder gives mid to late October. One outdoor report mentions purple tones on leaves and flowers toward the end of ripening. Dinafem distinguishes 2 phenotypes, a stretched, sativa-leaning one and a more compact, indica-leaning one; one grower noted clear differences between individual plants.
According to Dinafem, the White Widow parent traces back to a cutting about 15 years old, crossed with one of the oldest sativa clones from the breeder's mother plant collection. Dinafem itself quantifies the sativa share differently: the strain page states 60 % sativa, while breeder blog posts from 2016 and 2014 speak of 70 and 80 %. Some strain descriptions attribute Moby Dick to Barney's Farm, others list Dinafem as the original breeder.
The strain appears as a parent in further crosses. Big Buddha Seeds combined it with Cheese to make Cheesy Dick, Underworld Genetix with Jealousy to make Chubby. Dinafem released Moby Dick CBD, a variant that, according to its description, contains THC and CBD in equal parts.
The breeder lists competition placements from 2007 to 2019. First places came at the Copa El Punto 2007 in the outdoor category, at the Copa del Plata 2008 and at the Copa Bitox 2009 in the Indoor Sativa category, plus the title of best sativa at the Summer Cup 2011 in the Canary Islands and the Girl of the Year 2010 award. At the Copa Cannamex 2015 it took 3rd place outdoors, as it did in 2019 at the V Copa Cata Zona Norte in Buenos Aires in the solvent-free extraction category.
Dinafem states 17 to 22 % THC and 0.01 to 0.2 % CBD. Other strain descriptions give THC values of 17 to 27 %, one of them additionally 1 % CBG.
Dinafem describes the scent as lemon, spices, incense and cedar wood against a Haze background. Pine and wood appear in grow reports, and one outdoor grower additionally noticed peppermint. For flavor, growers name earth, hashish and pine, consumers also citrus and vanilla. An analysis in its in-house lab Dinalab found 2.558 % total terpenes, according to the breeder. A Canadian producer and other strain descriptions consistently name terpinolene as the leading terpene, followed by myrcene and ocimene in varying order.
Dinafem describes a very strong, long-lasting head effect that comes close to the psychedelic. Consumers report energy, focus, creativity, elevated mood and talkativeness, several of them a clear head without tiredness; one grower gave an effect duration of 2 to 3 hours. Against this stand reports of nervousness and paranoia, which increased over hours in individual consumers, as well as dry mouth, dry eyes, dizziness and headaches.
Green House Seeds lists its own feminized Moby Dick with the same parent information but gives only 40 % sativa. The breeder states 23 % THC, 0.12 % each of CBD and CBN, 9 weeks of flowering, up to 800 g/m² indoors and up to 1200 g per plant outdoors with harvest in the first week of October. Growers of this version describe 2 phenotypes, fir-tree-shaped growth that needs support and, unlike the reports on the Dinafem version, susceptibility to mold as well as sensitivity to temperature fluctuations.
Barney's Farm lists a Moby Dick from G13 Haze and White Widow, for which the breeder specifies warm, dry locations or a ventilated greenhouse outdoors. Dinafem added Moby Dick#2 to its own line, from JYD Haze and Northern Lights with 60 to 70 days of flowering, 475 g/m² indoors and 16 to 20 % THC, as well as Moby Dick XXL Autoflowering from autoflowering lines of White Widow and Haze. According to the breeder, the latter needs 80 days from seed to harvest and yields 500 g/m² indoors at 15 to 22 % THC.
