also known as MOB, Mother of All Berries, Maine Original Blueberry, M.O.B., Mother of All Berries, Mother of Berry, Maine Original Blueberry, MOD
Mother of Berries, or MOB for short, is an indica from the US East Coast with a pronounced blueberry scent, whose origin between Boston and Maine is disputed.
Reports disagree on whether Mother of Berries comes from Maine or from Boston, yet on the smell they keep arriving at blueberries. The indica, known by the abbreviation MOB, circulated on the US East Coast as a cutting before T.H.Seeds from Amsterdam released it as feminized seed. With this version the breeder took 2nd place in the Indica category at the Expo Grow Cannabis Cup in Irún, Spain, in 2015.
T.H.Seeds speaks of East Coast genetics that an acquaintance from Boston brought to Amsterdam. A more detailed account appeared in 2019 in the magazine High Times: in the mid to late 1990s, a few seeds turned up in Californian weed that ended up in Boston. The grower who raised a mother plant from one of them named the strain MOD after the grower's own initials; it later became MOB so that the grower could not be identified. A cutting reached T.H.Seeds via an acquaintance of a co-founder, and the company had it selected in Spain and feminized seeds produced.
Other strain descriptions place MOB in Maine and also read the abbreviation as Maine Original Blueberry; further names are Mother of All Berries and Mother of Berry. Two readings of the lineage stand side by side: Blueberry with Jerry Berry or, as a presumed line, the Jerry Berry cut from Freezland with Blueberry from DJ Short. None of the sources reviewed names the original breeder. T.H.Seeds lists the strain as pure indica, Blind Rooster Seeds at 80 %, another description at 90 % indica share.
As a parent, MOB is found among others in Mother of All Cherries by In House Genetics, a cross with Cherry Pie, in Glueberriez by Old School Genetics with Gorilla Glue #4, and in Berry Godmother by Dirty Worms Farm. For the latter, the breeder states having crossed a cutting kept for 20 years with a Blueberry F9 father.
T.H.Seeds describes scent and flavor with berries, blueberry and sweetness. In user reports, blueberry sets the tone, sometimes supplemented by mixed berries, a raspberry finish or a slight skunk note; in isolated cases the scent is described as floral and the flavor as earthy-sweet. The test report in High Times highlights a fruity-sweet smell of forest berries, one user report the very intense smell of the flowers.
Mainly described is a body-centered relaxation that gradually turns into sleepiness, accompanied by cheerfulness, euphoria, tingling and appetite; individual reports mention couch lock. Other consumers find MOB mild and compatible with daily routines, with creativity, focus or talkativeness instead of tiredness.
Dry mouth is named as a side effect, in one report also dizziness. Other strain descriptions additionally list dry eyes and anxiousness.
Three flower products whose suppliers have published analyses ranged from 18.41 to 26.78 % THCA; for the sample with the highest value, a total THC of 23.773 % is reported. Two of the products come from the US hemp market, the testing labs are not named, and whether all trace back to the same genetics cannot be verified. Values vary by batch, cultivation and phenotype. Another strain description gives 19 to 21 % THC.
The two analyses with a terpene profile show 2.605 and 3.23 % total terpenes. In the first, myrcene leads ahead of caryophyllene, limonene and humulene; the second names nerolidol, linalool, myrcene and humulene as the dominant terpenes. Other strain descriptions give limonene, myrcene and caryophyllene.
For a test grow published in High Times in 2019, 4 plants of the T.H.Seeds version were sent into flower after 4 weeks of growth. They stayed compact, with very tightly stacked internodes and strong branching, reached 46 to 58 cm and flowered for 46 to 52 days. Together they yielded 273 g, on average 68 g per plant. The firm, rounded buds turned pink to purple and were densely covered in resin glands.
Several user reports describe the strain as uncomplicated; one considers it suitable for indoors and outdoors and sees it as well suited to northern climate zones, another also for beginners. A grow report on the feminized T.H.Seeds version, by contrast, describes numerous hermaphrodite flowers that pollinated the entire crop, and refers to a second report with the same finding.
T.H.Seeds offers MOB only as feminized and states 7 to 8 weeks of flowering, and for indoor cultivation a height of 60 to 110 cm and 450 to 550 g/m². Blind Rooster Seeds lists a Mother Of Berry (MOB), said to have been bred in Nova Scotia, exclusively as regular seed with about 53 days of flowering, and describes it as a stocky, easy-to-grow plant with mold resistance and high yield. Dirty Water Organics obtained feminized seeds from a cutting that had circulated only as a clone and was reversed with STS, and states around 60 days of flowering.
