Blue Dream

The parent lines of Blue Dream are well documented, its breeder is not: the strain crosses Blueberry with a Haze and appeared around 2003 as a clone-only cut in the dispensaries of Santa Cruz, California, with no breeder ever having claimed it. Sativa-leaning at roughly 60 % sativa, it was passed on clonally for years before seed versions under the same name followed.

Genetics and Origin:

The cannabis author Ed Rosenthal classifies the strain as a cross of Haze and DJ Short's Blueberry. Which Haze was involved remains unclear: batch documentation from a producer who grows the line commercially names Blueberry from DJ Short and a Santa Cruz Haze, Humboldt Seed Organization lists Blueberry x Super Silver Haze for its own version, and DNA Genetics lists Blueberry x Haze #1. A journalistic investigation additionally lists a version from Mystic Seeds, described as Blueberry x OG Kush, and concludes that no single breeder can be identified.

Documented offspring include Atomic Blue Dream from Sensi Seeds, Blue Amnesia from Amsterdam Genetics, Alki Haze from South Bay Genetics, and Blue Dream Auto from Humboldt Seed Organization, for which the breeder states a Ruderalis cross.

Aroma and Flavor:

The smell is dominated by sweet blueberry and berry notes, complemented by earthy and vanilla-like touches. Flavor descriptions mention berry, vanilla and herbal nuances. Humboldt Seed Organization describes Haze, citrus fruit and cedar in the aroma of its own version, along with a lemony flavor with pine and incense; Blimburn Seeds additionally lists mango.

Effects:

User reports describe a clear, head-focused onset with elevated mood, euphoria and increased creativity, often accompanied by talkativeness, later followed by physical relaxation. Dry mouth, dry eyes and dizziness are named as accompanying effects; some reviews mention restlessness, anxiety and paranoia at higher amounts.

THC and CBD Content:

For commercially grown flower of this strain, 39 batch analyses have been published. They range from 18 to 23.7 % THC at 0.01 to 0.09 % CBD, varying considerably depending on batch, cultivation and phenotype. One flower of this strain marketed as medical cannabis is listed at 15 % THC and under 1 % CBD. Separate from this are the figures given by seed breeders: Humboldt Seed Organization states 19 % THC and 0.1 % CBD, Blimburn Seeds and DNA Genetics each state 17 to 24 % THC.

Lab Results:

The same batches were also analyzed for terpenes. Total content ranges from 1.73 to 4.61 %. Myrcene leads almost throughout at 0.61 to 2.223 %, followed by caryophyllene at 0.30 to 1.05 %, ocimene at 0.06 to 0.81 % and humulene at 0.14 to 0.29 %. Other strain descriptions place pinene second in the profile; in these analyses it appears only in trace amounts, while farnesene repeatedly ranks among the four strongest terpenes.

Cultivation:

Strain descriptions cite 8 to 10 weeks of flowering and mid-October as the outdoor harvest time, up to 430 g/m² indoors and up to 500 g per plant outdoors. The strain is listed for both indoor and outdoor growing, with a preference for temperate locations with plenty of midday sun; difficulty is rated as moderate. It is described as suitable for the Sea of Green method, with powdery mildew and spider mites listed as weak points.

Versions from Different Breeders:

The seed versions differ considerably in their stated figures. Humboldt Seed Organization lists its own feminized version at 70 % sativa and 30 % indica, 65 to 70 days of flowering, 400 to 600 g/m² indoors, 2000 to 3000 g per plant outdoors, 3 to 4 m of growth height and harvest in mid-October. Blimburn Seeds states 8 to 10 weeks, 600 g/m², 500 to 700 g per plant, 2 m of height, and a first place in the outdoor category of Spannabis 2011. DNA Genetics also states 8 to 10 weeks. Alongside these is the autoflowering Blue Dream Auto from Humboldt Seed Organization, with 13 % THC, a total cycle of 70 to 75 days from germination to harvest, 30 to 75 g per plant indoors and 1 to 1.5 m of height.

Community Experiences:

One point runs through the grow reports: the stated flowering time is often exceeded. One grower harvested after more than 80 days of flowering, on one plant the trichomes remained clear even after 90 days, and another report cites 8 to 9 weeks. Those growing from seed describe strong variation between plants, since the lines in circulation are reproductions and do not correspond to the original cutting. Reports diverge on the topic of moisture: one outdoor grow survived two weeks of continuous rain with almost no mold. Also documented is a deep purple phenotype, which the grower attributes to the Blueberry ancestry and to cold; the seedlings were kept at 15 to 17 °C.
