In spring 2006, Dinafem added a feminized cross of Blueberry and OG Kush to its catalog under the name Blue Kush. According to the breeder, it was meant to combine the potency and flavor of OG Kush with the color and scent of the Blueberry line; a predominantly indica-leaning Blueberry selection was used. There is now also an autoflower version from Dinafem as well as strains of the same name from other breeders, including one with a completely different pedigree.
Genetics and Origin:
Dinafem puts the ratio at 55 % sativa and 45 % indica. Other strain descriptions likewise list Blue Kush as a sativa-leaning hybrid, and one even gives 80 % sativa. In grow reports, however, the plant looks more typical of an indica. A documented offspring is Red Hot And Blue by Jörd Genetics, a cross of Red Hot Cookies and Dinafem's Blue Kush.
Cultivation:
Dinafem describes the plant as medium-tall and fir-tree-shaped. Compared with OG Kush it forms thicker stems and shorter spacing between the nodes, but it stretches noticeably once flowering begins; the breeder considers SCROG and SOG suitable. Depending on temperature, the upper parts turn blue, purple or lavender, while the lower leaves may stay green. According to Dinafem, the buds are compact and resinous.
For indoor flowering the breeder states 60 days, while a 2016 blog post gives 60 to 65 days. Outdoors, harvest takes place in early to mid October. Dinafem states 500 g/m² indoors and 600 to 800 g per plant outdoors at an outdoor height of 1.5 m. Warm, dry locations in a temperate climate or a greenhouse are preferred; according to the breeder, the strain tolerates humidity well, and inexperienced growers are said to manage it as well.
Community Experiences:
The grow reports confirm that it suits beginners, but flowering took longer than stated: 63 to 70 days are documented, and an indoor grow published by Dinafem itself came to 66 to 68 days. Final heights indoors ranged between 70 and 130 cm, and a hydroponic grow in a DWC system produced 130 g. The plant gets by with little fertilizer; growers differ on whether it tolerates fluctuations or quickly reacts with burn.
Reports also differ on sturdiness. Some praise strong side branches, while others describe thin, stretched stems that needed support from the 5th week of flowering. The dried buds are considered hard and dense with a low leaf share, although one report rates the density as slightly below average. Mold did not occur in any of the reports. One grower noted slight hermaphrodite tendencies, another purple leaves well into flowering.
Aroma and Flavor:
Lemon, pine and berries over a Kush-typical, fuel-like base note, plus creamy berry tones: this is how Dinafem characterizes the scent, and for flavor the breeder names earth and hash with a fruity undertone. Growers perceive dark berries and diesel, in part blueberry and lemon, and taste diesel, rose and strawberry. Other strain descriptions add spicy and sweet notes; one of them lists myrcene as the dominant terpene, followed by pinene and caryophyllene.
Effects:
The breeder speaks of cerebral stimulation with physical calm. Consumers report elevated mood, euphoria and relaxation, some also creativity, concentration, talkativeness or fits of giggles. Whether the strain tends to energize or to subdue remains disputed: one report describes drifting off quickly, others an uplifting effect. Growers rate the strength from mediocre to very strong. Reported side effects are dry mouth, dry eyes and nervousness.
THC and CBD Content:
For the feminized version, Dinafem states 20 % THC; a blog post by the breeder from 2015 gave 18 %. Dinafem puts the CBD content at 0.1 to 0.2 %. In other strain descriptions, the THC figure ranges from 15 to 25 %.
Versions from Different Breeders:
Dinafem's autoflower version comes from Blueberry Auto and OG Kush Auto and is an equal split of indica and sativa. According to the breeder, 75 days pass from seed to harvest; stated are 350 to 400 g/m² indoors at 120 to 150 cm in height and 50 to 170 g per plant outdoors. Butter Bean Birdseeds offers a feminized Blue Kush Auto, likewise from Blueberry Auto and OG Kush Auto, and uses the line as a basis for further crosses.
The Blue Kush from B.O.G. Seeds has a different pedigree: according to the strain description, it goes back to Blue Moon Rocks and Sour Bubble, is predominantly indica-leaning, was only offered as regular seed and flowers in 49 to 55 days.
