Pine Tar

The pure indica line behind Pine Tar comes from Pakistan; breeders call it Pine Tar Kush, and it is also listed as Pine Tar OG or PTK for short. Tom Hill put it into circulation in Northern California, and since then several breeders have maintained the line or crossed it with other varieties.

Genetics and Origin:

As lineage, the description of Tom Hill's version names only Pakistani indica genetics. According to it, the line arrived in Northern California as an import from Pakistan in the early 1980s; New420Guy Seeds writes that Tom Hill brought the plants back from there himself. The Landrace Team likewise classes it as a Pakistani landrace from the 1980s.

An older backstory comes from Tonygreens Tortured Beans, in connection with its own cross Pine Tar Gush. According to that account, Tom Hill's Pine Tar Kush comes from his friend and mentor, known as “The Chemist”, who is said to have obtained the original material before 1960, before the Hippie Trail came into being. Hill is said to have kept the line through open pollination and passed it on to Leangreen, from whom it reached Verdantgreen. When the genetics left Pakistan is therefore disputed: one account gives the early 1980s, the other the time before 1960.

Statements also differ on how much the line has changed. One strain description considers it nearly unchanged from its original form, while another calls it a direct descendant of Kush.

Pine Tar is documented as a parent in several crosses. Hazeman Seeds combined Pine Tar Kush with Purple Rhino to make Purple Monster, and Cannabeizein crossed Gobbstopper with Pine Tar to make Oregon Noble. Pagoda Seeds used Tom Hill's line together with Herijuana and Royal Kush, and Tonygreens Tortured Beans used it for Pine Tar Gush together with Gorilla Bubble.

Versions from Different Breeders:

All versions listed here are described exclusively as regular seed. Tom Hill's original is intended for indoor and outdoor cultivation.

• The Landrace Team: preservation breeding from Tom Hill's Pine Tar Kush, crossed with itself. Grown outdoors under natural light, it flowers for 7 to 8 weeks according to the breeder; intended for indoor, outdoor and greenhouse.
• New420Guy Seeds: 7 to 9 weeks of flowering, 20 to 24 % THC, indoor 10 to 12 ounces (around 283 to 340 g) per square meter, outdoor at least 12 ounces per plant, with harvest between late September and mid-October.
• Old Dreams Genetics: Pakistani inbred line, ready for harvest indoors after about 60 days, outdoors in the 2nd week of October. The breeder counts it among its higher-yielding pure indicas and rates the potency as average.

THC Content:

Strain descriptions independent of the breeders give 18 to 22 % THC. The figure from New420Guy Seeds for its own version is higher, at 20 to 24 %.

Aroma and Flavor:

Pine and tar dominate the descriptions, accompanied by wood, earth, sweetness and skunk. One description adds citrus and a spicy impression on the exhale. For its own line, The Landrace Team highlights green apple, cream and a hint of floor wax, with a sweet, creamy note on the palate that lingers for a long time. User reports add malt and diesel. On terpenes, one strain description lists myrcene first, followed by caryophyllene and limonene, without giving quantities.

Effects:

Old Dreams Genetics describes a chatty high, The Landrace Team a calm effect that is not narcotic. Users report relaxation, elevated mood and appetite, in some cases also drowsiness. How heavy the strain feels is reported differently: some reports describe a strong effect that can lead to falling asleep, others a stimulating phase with creativity and focus that is more reminiscent of a sativa. Dry mouth and dry eyes are also mentioned, occasionally headache, dizziness, anxiousness and smoke that scratches the throat.

Cultivation:

The Landrace Team describes plants with large leaves on thick stems, few side shoots and short internodes. The foliage ranges from light yellowish olive to dark green. Large calyxes form rock-hard flowers whose resin coating extends onto the outer leaves. Another description shows small, round flowers in light green with few orange hairs and very sticky resin. For flowering time, one strain description gives 60 to 65 days.
