Godfather OG won the Best Indica category at the 2013 High Times Cannabis Cup in Los Angeles; the breeder and lineage of this OG strain remain disputed to this day.

Research as of 11/04/2026

A 1st place is the best-documented data point in the history of Godfather OG: in 2013 the strain won the Best Indica category at the High Times Cannabis Cup in Los Angeles. According to a press report, the winning flower came from Alpha Medic. Who originally bred the plant, on the other hand, is unclear, and several lineages circulate under the name today. Common alternative names are Godfather, GFO and The Don of All OGs.

Genetics and Origin:

Godfather OG is most often listed as a cross of XXX OG and Alpha OG, in strain descriptions as well as by Kingsmen Genetics, Zamnesia, ILGM, Seed Supreme and MSNL. The same press report states that no original breeder is known, so this lineage cannot be verified. Southern California is considered the region of origin.

The other details vary widely. Big Dog Exotic Genetics calls Godfather OG the basis of its own breeding program, describes it as a clone-only plant and gives the lineage as (Bubba Kush × L.A. Confidential) × Granddaddy Purple; the breeder's feminized S1 line came from this cutting. Other lineages in circulation are OG Kush × Granddaddy Purple, Alien OG × OG Kush at Blim Burn Seeds and OG Kush × Alpha OG at Plantation Premium Seeds. On its own site, Homegrown Cannabis Co. describes a triple cross of Granddaddy Purple, OG Kush and Alpha OG, while the same version is listed elsewhere as XXX OG × Alpha OG.

Crosses such as Tropicana OG, Pastry Pimp and Mac Pimp trace back to the Big Dog line, in which Godfather OG was combined with Tropicana Cookies, Glazed Pastries and MAC 1. Godfather Purple Kush and 200HP are named as further offspring.

Aroma and Flavor:

The scent is described as earthy and pungent, with pine, spicy, kush-like tones and a faint hint of grape. The press report highlights a spicy flavor reminiscent of gasoline, shot through with grape skin. The breeders set their own accents: ILGM names a fuel note, Zamnesia and MSNL sweet fruit, MSNL additionally wood, Homegrown Cannabis Co. a skunk tone. In flavor, sweet, woody and herbal notes with pine and grape are described. Strain descriptions and several breeders name myrcene, limonene and caryophyllene as the dominant terpenes, in each case without quantities.

Effects:

User reports describe a body-focused, sedating effect that sets in after 10 to 30 minutes and can turn into drowsiness. Relaxation, euphoria and a tingling sensation are also mentioned; some consumers first go through an uplifted or creative phase. Reported side effects are dry eyes, dry mouth and dizziness, occasionally also headache and nervousness.

THC and CBD Content:

A widely circulated strain description gives 19 % THC as the typical value, mentions measurements of up to 28 % and lists CBD at 0 %. The press report puts the average at 14 to 20 % and mentions a batch with 34 % THC for which no evidence exists.

The breeders give the following for their versions: Kingsmen Genetics 24 to 28 %, Seed Supreme 25 to 34 %, Zamnesia 30 %, Plantation Premium Seeds up to 30 %, MSNL up to 33 %, Homegrown Cannabis Co. up to 34 % and ILGM 34 %. Big Dog Exotic Genetics puts the original cutting at 35 %. Zamnesia gives CBD as 0 to 1 % and MSNL as less than 1 %.

Versions from Different Breeders:

All versions are listed as feminized seed. For flowering time, the breeders give 49 to 74 days: Plantation Premium Seeds 49 to 63 days, ILGM around 56 days, Big Dog Exotic Genetics around 70 days and Kingsmen Genetics around 74 days. Expressed in weeks, Zamnesia and Seed Supreme count on 8 to 9, MSNL and Homegrown Cannabis Co. on 8 to 10.

Zamnesia gives up to 550 g/m² indoors and up to 700 g per plant outdoors, with harvest in mid-October and heights of 140 cm indoors and 180 cm outdoors. Plantation Premium Seeds gives 400 to 500 g/m², up to 600 g per plant and a compact, bushy growth with strong side branches. MSNL provides 500 to 600 g/m², a height of 100 to 180 cm and a harvest in late September; ILGM gives 500 g/m² and a harvest in early October. Kingsmen Genetics calculates in ounces and arrives at 12 to 15 per square meter. Seed Supreme and Homegrown Cannabis Co. point to the dense flowers, for which humidity must be controlled; on its own site, Homegrown at the same time ascribes resistance to mold and pests to the strain.

As an autoflower, Plantation Premium Seeds lists Godfather OG Auto, made from OG Kush, Granddaddy Purple and a ruderalis line. According to the breeder, a cycle takes 70 to 75 days from germination, with 60 to 90 cm height, 400 to 500 g/m² indoors, 80 to 150 g per plant outdoors and 20 to 28 % THC. MSNL also lists an autoflower variant.

Community Experiences:

Growers describe hard, dense and heavily resinous flowers that are noticeably sticky; one reports that the buds felt almost damp with resin. Growth is considered bushy, the scent particularly sweet. An outdoor grow harvested in early September yielded 26 ounces of dried flowers. There are dissenting voices too: individual growers report a weak germination rate or stunted growth, one reports problems under high light intensity.

The strength of the effect is emphasized. Some seasoned consumers, however, consider present-day flowers weaker than they used to be, and one report doubts whether the strain still lives up to its reputation compared with newer breeds.
