Tangerine Dream

Limonene leads the terpene profile of Tangerine Dream at 0.87 % when averaged lab data from the US market is used as the basis; β-caryophyllene follows at 0.59 %, terpinolene at 0.41 % and myrcene at 0.34 %. Other strain descriptions put myrcene in first place. The sativa-leaning cross of G13, Afghan and Neville's A5 Haze comes from Barney's Farm and won the High Times Cannabis Cup in 2010.

Lab Results:

How many samples went into these averages is not stated. Further down the profile come linalool at 0.22 %, humulene at 0.20 % and α- and β-pinene at 0.14 % each. Another description names limonene as the main terpene alongside myrcene, β-caryophyllene and pinene. For medical flowers of this strain from Canadian cultivation, myrcene, linalool, β-pinene, β-caryophyllene and limonene are listed as terpenes, but amounts are missing.

These medical flowers are declared in 2 grades with 14 and 16 % THC, with CBD below 1 % in each case. That is well below the breeders' figures; levels vary by batch, cultivation and phenotype.

THC and CBD Content:

Barney's Farm currently gives 23 % THC for the feminized version. Older descriptions of the same version, based on the breeder, stated 25 % THC and 1.8 % CBD. Zamnesia Seeds also puts its version at 25 % THC with low CBD. Strain descriptions range from 19 to 25 % THC, and one also lists 1 % CBG.

Genetics and Origin:

According to Barney's Farm, the strain is made up of G13, Afghan and Neville's A5 Haze, with 60 % sativa and 40 % indica. More detailed accounts describe the breeding path in 2 steps: G13 was first crossed with Neville's A5 Haze, then the offspring were crossed again with G13.

At the 23rd High Times Cannabis Cup in 2010, Tangerine Dream, entered by Barney's Coffeeshop, took 1st place in the main category ahead of Super Lemon Haze and L.A. Cheese. As a parent, the strain is documented in Mandarine 47, which Anesia Seeds crossed with AK-47.

Aroma and Flavor:

Barney's Farm describes an intense citrus scent with berries and sweetness, and a flavor of orange, berries, sugar and tropical fruit. Zamnesia Seeds compares the scent of its version to the peel of mandarins and pomelos and adds spice and incense. In grow reports, mandarin predominates, accompanied on the palate by lemon and pepper. One grower missed the citrus aroma entirely and found hints of garlic and scallion instead; another found smell and taste decidedly spicy.

Effects:

Consumers describe a mood-lifting effect felt mainly in the head, joined by physical relaxation; euphoria, focus, talkativeness and giggling are also mentioned. Reports differ on strength and duration: some found the effect mild and short, with tolerance rising quickly, others strong and long-lasting. Reported side effects are dry mouth, dry eyes and dizziness; one strain description also lists headache and nervousness.

Versions from Different Breeders:

4 versions are documented under the name, and their details differ in part considerably:

• Barney's Farm, original, feminized: 60 to 65 days of flowering, 500 to 600 g/m² indoors and 800 g per plant outdoors, 90 to 110 cm height indoors and 120 to 150 cm outdoors, harvest in the 1st to 2nd week of October. Older descriptions of the same version gave 70 to 75 days of flowering.
• Tangerine Dream Auto from Barney's Farm: a cross with Auto #1, for which one strain description gives 67 to 75 days from seedling to harvest and a height of 60 to 70 cm.
• Zamnesia Seeds, feminized: same parents, 8 to 9 weeks of flowering, up to 600 g/m² indoors and up to 900 g per plant outdoors, 120 cm height. Whether this is a separate selection or a reproduction is not documented.
• YAK: an S1 line from 2013 made from the Barney's Farm original, with around 63 days of flowering, since discontinued.

Cultivation:

Outdoors, according to cultivation guides, Tangerine Dream prefers a Mediterranean climate, and one of them also names temperate regions. One guide recommends a Sea of Green, heavy cutting back during the growth phase for better air circulation, and silicon for the thick branches; the high resin content makes trimming laborious.

Community Experiences:

The grow reports are inconsistent. Indoors, flowering there lasted 70 to 92 days, longer than Barney's Farm states. Stretch varied just as widely: in one grow the plants went from about 120 to 170 cm after the switch, in another from around 30 to 200 cm. Several growers report large phenotype variation, and in one case only some of the plants produced usable flowers. The dried buds ranged from rock-hard and compact to rather loose. In several reports the plants tolerated topping of the main shoot poorly, and heavy shoots sometimes needed supports. Reports on mold susceptibility contradict each other; one grower observed hermaphrodites from feminized seeds. An outdoor report describes the plants as insensitive to temperature swings and fungal infestation.
