Mochi is not an independent cross but phenotype number 47 from the Gelato line. Gelato was created when Mario Guzman, known as Sherbinski, crossed Sunset Sherbet with Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies in San Francisco; several phenotypes from this cross were given numbers, including 33, 41, 43 and 47. Sherbinskis lists the 47 as Mochi Gelato. Other names in circulation include Gelato 47, Gelato #47, Mochilato, Mochi Lato and White Mochi.
How strongly the indica side dominates is not settled. The strain entry attributed to Sherbinskis classifies Mochi as predominantly indica, Willits Family Farm states a 50/50 ratio for its own seeds, and Blimburn Seeds gives 60 % sativa and 40 % indica.
The name itself is not used consistently either. A US hemp flower vendor describes its Mochi Gelato product as a cross of Mochi and Gelato, while one strain description refers to a three-way cross of Mochi, Sunset Sherbet and GSC. Neither account fits the derivation as a Gelato phenotype.
A grower who had grown the 47 alongside Gelato 33 described it as more compact, with firmer buds and a noticeably stronger effect. Mochi has since become a parent in its own right: West Coast Cure crossed it with Runtz to produce Mochi Runtz, and Alien Genetics crossed it with Sour Apple IBL to produce Apple Mochi. SeedStockers' Forbidden Mochi Auto combines Mochi Gelato with Forbidden Fruit and Gelato 41 Auto. Almond Mochi is also listed as a descendant.
Sherbinskis describes a sweet, slightly tangy opening that shifts into earthy and mint notes, listing orange, cinnamon, lavender, pine and sweets among the aromas. Other strain descriptions emphasize mint and menthol, floral notes, vanilla and tangy fruit. Consumer reports diverge: some describe sweetness, creaminess and a touch of mint, others earthy, doughy and herbal notes that are less sweet than in other Gelato plants. One reviewer picked up on sweet bread, while a grower noted sandalwood and fuel instead of the usual Gelato notes.
Sherbinskis' description lists limonene, caryophyllene, linalool, pinene and myrcene as terpenes; other strain descriptions place caryophyllene ahead of limonene and myrcene.
Consumer reports mention creativity, relaxation, euphoria and uplifted mood, with some also noting focus, giggling, tingling or an energy boost. Other reports end in sleepiness. One reviewer experienced a balance of physical relaxation and mental stimulation, while a grower described a strong, indica-like effect. Reported side effects include dry mouth, dry eyes and anxiety, with individual reports mentioning dizziness, a sense of heaviness and paranoid thoughts.
One strain description gives 20 to 26 % THC, another lists 0.26 to 0.67 % for CBD. Breeder figures for THC vary depending on the version.
Strain descriptions depict short, compact plants and a flowering time of 9 to 10 weeks; Premium Cultivars describes low, bushy growth with strong side branching and a very intense odor during flowering. The buds sit densely, carry orange to red pistils and heavy resin, and turn purple when temperatures drop toward the end of flowering.
