Rainbow Chip

For Rainbow Chip, Exotic Genetix of Tacoma in the US state of Washington crossed the mother Sunset Sherb, also called Sunset Sherbert, with its in-house Mint Chocolate Chip as the father. The breeder lists the result as a 50/50 hybrid. Within the Exotic Genetix breeding program, the strain has since served as a parent of numerous further crosses.

Genetics and Origin:

The parents also have documented pedigrees: Sunset Sherb descends from Girl Scout Cookies and Pink Panties, while Mint Chocolate Chip is an F2 line at Exotic Genetix from Thin Mint GSC and Green Ribbon BX. According to a widely circulated strain description, Rainbow Chip belonged in 2018 to a series of crosses with Mint Chocolate Chip as the father. Terpenes and vigor were meant to come from him, the sweeter note from Sunset Sherbert.

Offspring from the same breeder include Rainbow Runtz, a cross with Runtz, as well as Pressure with Gary Payton, Blackout Bobby with Gelato, Tongue Splasher with Gushers and Southern Sugar with Georgia Pie. Besides the original version, there is also a regular F2 generation from Exotic Genetix. One individual strain description lists Runtz as another name for Rainbow Chip; in the pedigrees, however, Runtz appears as a separate crossing partner.

Aroma and Flavor:

Sweet fruit, chocolate and mint are the constants in the descriptions. Citrus and lime, menthol, sour and spicy tones, and earthy and herbal touches are added to these. One producer describes the flavor as sweet and fruity with chocolate and a minty finish. Limonene is named as the dominant terpene, followed by caryophyllene and pinene.

User reports describe the flavor variously as creamy-sweet and slightly fruity, or as mint with a salty cracker note. One report differs markedly, describing a woody, tea-like smell with vanilla that is reminiscent of an old eraser.

THC and CBD Content:

Strain descriptions give THC values between 20 and 26 % for Rainbow Chip, one of them additionally 1 % CBG. For CBD, 2 descriptions give 1 to 3 %.

Effects:

The user reports evaluated describe euphoria, elevated mood and cheerfulness, along with energy, creativity and focus. Several users classify the strain as a sativa-leaning hybrid and describe it as functional during the day. Others report that a deeper relaxation follows the stimulating onset. Individual reports call the effect strong, whereas one user felt only mild relaxation.

Dry mouth is mentioned several times as a side effect. One report describes nervousness instead of relaxation, combined with a queasy feeling and sluggishness. Strain descriptions also list paranoia, dry eyes and dizziness.

Cultivation:

Exotic Genetix gives a flowering time of 56 to 63 days for the original version, rates the plant as medium-tall and high-yielding, and describes it as suitable for indoor and outdoor cultivation. As a growth form, the breeder recommends a multi-topped bush. Regular and feminized seeds are documented. For the regular F2 generation, a product description gives 8 to 9 weeks of flowering and an outdoor harvest from late September to early October. 2 strain descriptions assign the strain a warm, humid climate.

Details on bud structure differ. One strain description speaks of airy, cluster-shaped flowers in forest green with thin light orange hairs and dense trichome coverage, whereas a user report describes firm, dense buds. In a documented indoor grow, flowering was finished after 50 days. The plant doubled its height from about 50 to around 100 cm, grew in a fir-tree shape and set many strong buds on the side shoots, though the grower rated the branches as rather weak.
