Reports on Purple Gorilla, the oldest of which date from 2014, return above all to its color: deep purple buds with purple hairs and a dense coat of resin, in one case with no green visible at all. Consumers judge the effects far less uniformly, and little can be said with certainty about the origin. Strain descriptions classify the hybrid as indica-leaning and place it in the San Francisco Bay Area, without naming a breeder.
Community Experiences:
The core of the reports is a physical relaxation that can turn into drowsiness. Consumers also describe euphoria, giddiness and appetite, and several explicitly assign the strain to the evening. They disagree on onset: some find it creeping, others fast and strongly sedating.
Divergent reports are plentiful. Some highlight focus, energy and creativity and notice the calming side only in passing, while others describe a mix of calm and light stimulation in which they stayed active. One consumer found the effect weak, another describes a short but intense head effect. As side effects, the reports name dry eyes, dry mouth, an urge to cough and headaches as the effect wears off. Paranoid thoughts are mentioned occasionally, in one case on first use. Strain descriptions add dizziness.
Aroma and Flavor:
Grape is the common denominator, described several times as sour grape in the flavor. Berries and cherry over an earthy base note add to this, and depending on the report also citrus, skunk or a hint of gasoline. Strain descriptions also list spicy and peppery notes as well as ammonia.
The terpene profile is reported inconsistently. One strain description based on lab data lists myrcene ahead of pinene and caryophyllene, while another puts linalool and terpinolene first.
Genetics and Origin:
No verified pedigree exists. A widely circulated strain description leaves the lineage open, others suspect Mendocino Purps as an ancestor, in some cases supplemented by Purple Rain Forest. Another names Sour Diesel and Purple Urkle as parents. More recent profiles instead put Gorilla Glue #4, crossed with Purple Rain or with a line of Purple Kush or Granddaddy Purple. None of these statements traces back to a named breeder. Strain descriptions give the indica share as around 60 %.
The strain was used further by, among others, Skunk Devil Genetics, who combined it with Sour Stomper and crossed the result with Heart of Darkness to make Heart Stomper. New420Guy Seeds worked it with Girl Scout Cookies and SFV OG Kush into Pauls Purple Cookies.
THC and CBD Content:
Strain descriptions give 17 % THC and 0 % CBD, which marks the strain as THC-dominant. Other descriptions put the THC content higher without providing measurements.
Cultivation:
According to strain descriptions, flowering time is 7 to 8 weeks; outdoors, one description gives early October for harvest. Large purple main buds with heavy trichome coverage are described. The strain is considered suitable for indoor and outdoor cultivation; one description names a temperate, dry Mediterranean climate as favorable and attributes resistance to mold and powdery mildew to it. On difficulty the sources contradict each other, with ratings ranging from easy to difficult.
Versions from Different Breeders:
Under similar names, 2 breeders have released their own crosses with a documented pedigree. Greensleeves Genetics from Alaska crossed Purple Punch with Gorilla Glue for Purple Gorillas. According to the breeder, the plant stays rather small, forms many side shoots and needs around 50 days of flowering. In the scent, Greensleeves describes fresh muffins and grape soda, underlaid with the fuel note of Gorilla Glue. Seeds were available only in regular form.
Short Stuff Seedbank lists Auto Purple Gorilla as a feminized autoflower, bred from a cross of Gorilla Glue #4 and Auto OG Kush that was backcrossed with Auto Purple Amnesia. The breeder states 9 to 11 weeks from seed to harvest, at least 23 % THC and a citrus-heavy aroma with earthy notes.
