Purple Haze

Stakes and ties for the side branches, generous root space, constant airflow: what breeders write about growing Purple Haze fits a vigorous sativa from the Haze line. Behind the name, however, is not a single uniform plant but a series of versions with different lineages, different seed types, and widely diverging flowering-time figures.

Cultivation:

Positronics describes for its selection medium-thick stems, large, thinly serrated leaves, and a christmas-tree or candelabra-like branching pattern with wide internodes. The breeder advises plenty of water, ample root space, and constant airflow; indoors, early flower induction, and outdoors, sowing only in June or July so growth doesn't get out of hand. For balcony or terrace, they consider the plants unsuitable.

Sensi Seeds names a warm, sunny climate of Mediterranean character for outdoor cultivation. According to G13 Labs, the name-giving coloration appears only at low temperatures toward the end of flowering: leaves and calyxes then shift from dark green to lavender or violet, occasionally toward blue. Strain descriptions rate the cultivation as not very demanding.

Versions from Different Breeders:

ACE Seeds introduced Purple Haze as a selection of purple and reddish phenotypes from its own Oldtimer's Haze population, as 100 % sativa from Mexican, Colombian, South Indian, and Thai lines, exclusively as regular seeds, with 16 to 20 weeks of flowering and a medium to low yield.

The feminized versions turn out considerably shorter. White Label states 50 to 65 days, 110 to 150 cm height, and around 100 g per plant, at 80 % sativa and 20 % indica from Purple Thai and a Haze line. G13 Labs names, for its cross of Afghan and Haze, 65 to 70 days, 18 % THC, 500 to 600 g/m² indoors, and 700 g per plant outdoors, with harvest there mid to late October. Positronics puts Purple Haze #1 at 70 days of flowering, 400 g/m² indoors, 350 g per plant outdoors, 22 % THC, and 0.2 % CBD. ILGM states 9 weeks of flowering, 17 to 20 % THC, and 0.1 % CBD. With Purple Haze Auto, Original Sensible Seeds offers an autoflowering cross with ruderalis, ready for harvest after around 40 days of flowering and 70 to 75 days from sowing; outdoors, plants between 100 and 150 cm have been documented, with phenotypes varying.

Genetics and Origin:

The parents are usually named as Purple Thai and Haze, though this is not reliably documented. One strain collection simply classifies Purple Haze as a purple phenotype of the Haze line, which traces back to Santa Marta Gold, Wacky Weed, and other Colombian sativas, and notes that the original plant was never sold as seed.

Several narratives circulate about its origin. A 2020 account places it in the 1970s in Santa Cruz, California, and attributes it to the Haze Brothers and Sam "the Skunkman," though it describes the account itself as hearsay. A 2026 publication instead names DJ Short and emphasizes that the plant traded under the name today is not identical to the one from the 1960s. The name comes from Jimi Hendrix's 1967 song, not the other way around.

Aroma and Flavor:

Sweet, earthy berry notes with grape and a sharp spicy component are described, along with floral accents named as violet or lavender. Sensi Seeds describes the scent of the growing plant as sweet and pungent, becoming earthier and more penetrating with a berry component after drying. G13 Labs describes its aroma differently, as fresh, woodsy, earthy, musky, and woody with a metallic touch; at ACE Seeds the profile is darker, black licorice and wild blackberry with wood, spice, and incense. Myrcene is named as the dominant terpene, followed by caryophyllene and limonene.

Effects:

User reports and strain descriptions name a cerebral, alert effect with euphoria, elevated mood, talkativeness, drive, and increased creativity, without pronounced physical heaviness. Sensi Seeds attributes a slight relaxing undertone to the indica share. Side effects named include dry mouth, dry eyes, dizziness, headache, and paranoid reactions.

THC and CBD Content:

Breeder figures range between 18 % at G13 Labs, 17 to 20 % at ILGM, and 22 % at Positronics. ILGM puts CBD at 0.1 %, Positronics at 0.2 %. Strain descriptions set the range lower, at 14 to 19 %.

Community Experiences:

Grow reports paint an inconsistent picture. In a 2016 indoor grow, the plants turned out wide and bushy, with small, very sticky flower clusters; the grower expected around 70 days of flowering. Another documented run ended after 135 days from germination to harvest with 368.54 g dry weight per plant. There, the plant had been topped above the fourth node, defoliated, and trained through two SCROG net levels; the flower clusters stayed long and rather slender but were easy to trim thanks to the small, resin-covered leaves.

In this run, the smell was described as sweet and citrusy with a candy note, the taste as citrus, cream, and sourness. Topping was tolerated by the plants in other reports as well, without noticeable setbacks.
