Tangie

Two versions of the same strain met in the Best Sativa category at the High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam in 2014: 1st place went to the clone submitted as Crockett's Cut by Crockett Family Farms, while 2nd place went to Tangie from DNA Genetics. The strain had already won the seed company sativa category at the 26th Cup in Amsterdam in 2013, listed in the results under the Reserva Privada label. In the same year, a Tangie flower submitted by a coffeeshop in the overall ranking and a Tangie wax in the Neder Hash category each placed 3rd. The breeders themselves count considerably more wins: DNA Genetics reports 10 competitions won in 8 months, Crockett Family Farms more than 20 awards in 2 years. The sativa-dominant cross of California Orange and Skunk comes from California.

Genetics and Origin:

Tangie was bred by Crockett Family Farms, a family operation in the Sierra Nevada foothills near Yosemite National Park that grew cannabis over several generations. The basis was the family heirloom California Orange, Cali-O for short, which the family crossed with numerous other strains season after season. The hit came from a father made up of Skunk and a family line that was never disclosed. Accounts of the timing differ: the breeder traces the lineage back to the mid-1990s, while another account places its origin in the 2000s. The strain was distributed internationally by DNA Genetics in Amsterdam, whose founders Don Morris and Aaron Yarkoni added the seeds to their catalog; Crockett Family Farms have since become part of DNA Genetics.

Details on the father vary. Named are Skunk #1, a Skunk hybrid with an unknown second parent and, at Nirvana Seeds, Super Skunk; DNA Genetics lists its own regular line as a cross of a clone-only cut with a Crockett selection. Several descriptions, including the one from DNA Genetics, trace Tangie back to the Tangerine Dream of the 1990s, while another source disputes this lineage. As a parent, Tangie is found among others in Tropicanna Cookies, for which a Tangie father was crossed with Cookies, in Squirt from Humboldt Seed Co., in Sour Tangie from Reserva Privada and in Tangilope from DNA Genetics.

Aroma and Flavor:

Orange in various shades runs through all descriptions. Crockett Family Farms name blood orange, grapefruit and rose. For the feminized version, DNA Genetics lists sweet lemon, mandarin and orange blossom in the scent and mandarin, lemon and bubble gum in the flavor; on its own page the breeder adds wood, spices and incense. Royal Queen Seeds describes citrus peel, pomelo and pineapple with candy-like sweetness, and other strain descriptions additionally mention apricot. User reports center on orange and mandarin with a sweet touch, and individual consumers notice earthy notes on the exhale or a honey-like taste. One grower noted that even the stems of young plants smelled of orange from the first pair of leaves.

As the dominant terpene, strain descriptions list myrcene ahead of terpinolene and pinene, while DNA Genetics names limonene instead.

Effects:

In user reports, Tangie is described as stimulating, with energy, focus, euphoria, creativity and talkativeness named. Other reports also emphasize pronounced physical relaxation, and in grow reports the effect is considered calming and long-lasting. Side effects named are dry mouth, dry eyes and nervousness, and one strain description also lists dizziness. One report considers the strain too strong for inexperienced consumers, and another description mentions discomfort with larger amounts.

THC and CBD Content:

The breeder figures vary widely and each applies only to that breeder's own version: DNA Genetics gives 22 to 24 % THC for the regular line, Royal Queen Seeds over 20 %, Nirvana Seeds 14 to 19 %. For the autoflower variant Tangie'matic, Fast Buds gives 21 to 22 % THC, in individual cases up to 23 %, plus 0.9 % CBD. One strain description lists 17 % THC and 1 % CBG.

Cultivation:

Crockett Family Farms give 9 to 10 weeks of flowering and 450 to 500 g/m² indoors for their regular version, and state that the strain is ready to harvest outdoors in mid-October. Other strain descriptions arrive at 7 to 9 weeks and rate cultivation as moderately difficult, while DNA Genetics describes the strain as robust and suitable for beginners. DNA Genetics recommends a warm, dry climate like the Mediterranean and soil outdoors, which is said to emphasize the citrus flavor; a cultivation guide at the same time credits Tangie with tolerating more humidity than many other strains.

The vertical growth stands out. According to DNA Genetics, Tangie gains height until the 5th week of flowering and branches heavily. In one documented indoor grow, a plant stretched by around 167 % after the switch, from about 30 to 80 cm, and formed long, strong side branches that needed support. The grower considered the strain well suited to SCROG and described it as resistant to mold and susceptible to temperature fluctuations and cold. Topped plants are said to grow bushier and form a more even canopy. Nirvana Seeds names LST and SCROG as suitable methods and describes tapering, cone-shaped flowers with dense trichome coverage.

• Crockett Family Farms (Crockett's Tangie): regular seeds only, 70 % sativa according to the breeder.
• DNA Genetics: regular seeds with a flowering time from 9 weeks and outdoor harvest in late September to early October; feminized seeds with 9 to 10 weeks of flowering and 450 to 550 g/m² indoors.
• Royal Queen Seeds: feminized, 9 to 10 weeks, 450 to 550 g/m² indoors at 80 to 120 cm height, 650 to 700 g per plant outdoors at 150 to 190 cm and harvest in October.
• Nirvana Seeds: feminized, with Super Skunk as the father, 9 to 10 weeks and 450 to 550 g/m² in Sea of Green.
• Fast Buds: Tangie'matic, a feminized autoflower version made from a Tangie clone and Ruderalis, ready to harvest 9 weeks from germination, 50 to 350 g per plant outdoors.

Community Experiences:

Growers who grew seeds from DNA Genetics report high yields, whereas user reports on the Crockett version mention rather average amounts indoors. Both sides agree on the high proportion of flowers relative to leaf mass. Two indoor grows came to 65 and 70 days of flowering. The picture is mixed on flower structure: one grower harvested rock-hard, very compact buds, another rather loose ones.
