Brain Freeze

Several crosses with unrelated lineages carry the name Brain Freeze. The best documented is the version from Dutchgrown Seeds, also listed as Brainfreeze: a cross of LUI, short for Legends Ultimate Indica, and C99, that is Cinderella 99. According to the breeder, this combination appeared once before, years ago, under the name LUI-99; the new release is said to yield more.

Genetics and Origin:

LUI traces back to Spice of Life Seeds and combines Ortega with Sweet Tooth. Cinderella 99 comes from Brothers Grimm, who bred it from Princess and P94. Dutchgrown Seeds justifies the pairing by saying that LUI on its own is too heavy for daytime use and that C99 is meant to balance the effect. The breeder classes the result as predominantly indica, while another strain description of the same cross puts the ratio at 60 % indica and 40 % sativa.

Versions from Different Breeders:

Dutchgrown Seeds distributes its Brainfreeze as regular seeds and states a flowering time of 55 to 60 days. Larger Than Life Seed Co. lists a genetically distinct strain under the same name, made from DJs Blueberry and Sour Banana Sherbet, also as regular seeds, with around 60 days of flowering and, according to the strain details, suitable for indoor, outdoor and greenhouse growing.

Further lineages appear on the US market. A producer from Florida describes its Brain Freeze as a blend of Blue Slushie and Kush Sorbet. A supplier of Californian flower names Ice Cream Cake × OG Fruit Smoothie, but on the same page also refers to LUI × C99. One user report attributes an origin in the Netherlands to the cross RS11 × Terpy Slurpy. The seed company Brain Freeze Seeds, active since 2019, does not carry a strain of the same name despite its own name.

THC and CBD Content:

The published values are far apart. One strain description gives 15 % THC and 0 % CBD, another for the line from LUI and C99 gives 18 to 23 % THC. The Californian supplier lists 26.2 % THC for its flower; this is a product claim with no laboratory named, and its lineage remains open.

Aroma and Flavor:

The descriptions agree most on blueberry. One pairs it with mango, a sweet-sour citrus note and fresh herbs, another with moss and tobacco, a third with mango and a chemical tone. User reports add cherry with a hint of diesel as well as pine with peppery lime, without naming the version in question. On the ranking of terpenes the strain descriptions agree: caryophyllene ahead of limonene and myrcene, with one also naming pinene, humulene and linalool.

Effects:

The basic tone of the user reports is a stimulating effect with elevated mood, energy and euphoria. Individual reports mention creativity, concentration, talkativeness, giggling fits and hunger. One calls the strain a balanced hybrid with a clear head, another describes a course from initial drive towards physical relaxation and tiredness.

A strain description of the LUI × C99 line is considerably more sedating, speaking of a hazy head high, heavy eyelids and physical heaviness through to falling asleep. Assessments of strength range from very strong to weak. Nervousness, dizziness, restless legs and jaw clenching are named as unwanted side effects.

Cultivation:

Dutchgrown Seeds names indoor and outdoor as growing locations. Another strain description gives 56 to 63 days of flowering indoors and an outdoor harvest between late September and early October. One user report describes dense, heavily frosted buds in a light lime green.
