For Frosty Gelato, the Dutch breeder Growers Choice drew on a line of its own: its in-house Braindamage was crossed with Gelato, and the offspring were then crossed with Gelato a second time. According to the breeder, even the first generation was densely covered in resin; the backcross was meant to bring more of the Gelato flavor into the line without giving up anything in THC content. The seeds then went to several growers for testing, and one of these test plants took 1st place in the Skunk Strains category at the Highlife Cup 2018.
Genetics and Origin:
The breeder's page expressly lists Gelato 41 as a parent. Pedigree information traces the Gelato portion back to Sunset Sherbet and Thin Mint Cookies, and Brain Damage back to White Siberian and ICE.
How the strain should be classed between indica and sativa remains contradictory. Growers Choice gives 60 % indica and 40 % sativa for the photoperiod plant. Several other strain descriptions, by contrast, list Frosty Gelato as a sativa-dominant hybrid, and one more as indica-dominant. For its own autoflower version, the breeder gives the reverse ratio, 60 % sativa to 40 % indica.
Growers Choice has used the strain further: Weddingcake x Frosty Gelato came from a cross with Wedding Cake and, according to the breeder, is half indica and half sativa.
Aroma and Flavor:
The breeder describes the scent as light and fruity, and the flavor as ice cream with a little cookie and a fresh note that turns toward fruit punch on the exhale. Other strain descriptions and user reports set different accents: pungent and earthy tones, sweet berries, cherry, skunk, spicy citrus notes, vanilla and a cheesy undertone.
Effects:
The general tenor of the user reports is an alert, stimulating effect with focus and elevated mood. Several consumers assign the strain to daytime and describe creativity and drive. Alongside these are reports in which it was mainly relaxing to sleepy. Dry mouth, dry eyes and dizziness are named as side effects, occasionally also anxiety.
THC Content:
Growers Choice states 27 to 30 % THC for the photoperiod version and 24 to 26 % for the autoflower version. One strain description, by contrast, gives 16 % THC and 1 % CBG.
Cultivation:
The photoperiod version is available only as feminized seed and is described for indoor as well as outdoor growing. Growers Choice gives 9 weeks of flowering indoors and a yield of 650 to 750 g/m². According to the breeder, indoor plants reach 130 to 160 cm and outdoor plants 160 to 190 cm, with harvest falling in the 2nd week of October. The breeder rates mold resistance as high; the strain is said to cope with warm as well as cold climates.
The finished flowers are described as dark olive green with a purple tinge and a dense trichome coating; consumers also report buds colored green and purple.
Versions from Different Breeders:
Besides the photoperiod strain, Growers Choice also has an autoflower version, listed on the breeder's page as a cross of Gelato 41 and Braindamage. The breeder states 11 weeks of flowering indoors, 80 to 100 cm in height indoors and 100 to 120 cm outdoors, and the same indoor yield of 650 to 750 g/m² as the photoperiod version.
The name is easily confused with Frosted Gelato. This name covers crosses from other breeders with a different pedigree, for example from Jungle Boys out of Gelato #45 and Mike Larry, or from BC Bud Supply out of Gelato and Frosted Cherry Cookies. At least one strain description treats both names as the same strain and counts the Growers Choice cross among the Frosted Gelato variants.
