Neither a single breeder nor a defined pedigree stands behind Hawaiian. The name refers to narrow-leaf sativa lines from the Hawaiian Islands, classed at times as pure sativa and at times as sativa-dominant hybrids, and also listed as Hawaiian Sativa or Hawaii. Some of its descendants, including Pineapple Express and Golden Goat, are better known than the original line.
Genetics and Origin:
None of the sources names parent strains. What is described is a landrace origin that developed through local selection in the warm maritime climate of the islands. The Hawaiian term pakalōlō for cannabis is first attested in 1842 in a Hawaiian-language newspaper. According to one strain description, early accounts of the tall island plants date from the 1960s and 1970s, and in the late 1980s European breeders took up the genetics for indoor hybrids.
As a parent, the line is well documented: Pineapple Express is regarded as a cross of Trainwreck and Hawaiian, Dutch Hawaiian as Dutch Treat × Hawaiian Sativa, and Golden Goat arose in Topeka, Kansas, when a Hawaiian-Romulan male pollinated an Island Sweet Skunk. Green House Seeds gives Hawaiian and Laos as the origin of Hawaiian Snow, and Jordan of the Islands gives the combination Blueberry × Hawaiian Sativa for Blue Hawaiian. Sensi Seeds crossed a Hawaii sativa with Northern Lights to make Hawaiian Indica.
Versions from Different Breeders:
The most precisely described seed line comes from the Federation Seed Company of British Columbia. The breeder lists its Hawaiian Sativa as a pure sativa from Big Island, found not far from Mauna Kea and, by its own account, stabilized on Vancouver Island for more than 20 years. For the regular seeds, Federation gives 10 to 12 weeks of flowering, a height of 8 feet, a yield of 8 ounces for fully grown plants and 0.75 ounces in a 2-gallon pot, and an outdoor harvest from 1 November. Growth is described as vigorous and tall with few side branches, and the shape as cactus-like.
Mudro Seeds lists a feminized sativa for indoors and outdoors under the name Hawaii, with around 85 flowering days, a yield of 350 g/m² and low demands according to the breeder. Original Strains also lists a regular outdoor line as Hawaii Sativa, with no further details.
Cultivation:
Independent of individual seed lines, 2 strain descriptions give a flowering time of 9 to 11 weeks. The plants are described as tall with long internodes, the yield is rated medium and the difficulty moderate, and a warm, sunny climate is named. The flowers are light green with orange hairs; several descriptions emphasize long, curved flower clusters reminiscent of bananas. Because of the strong stretch, a cultivation guide recommends topping in the growth phase and a SCROG net.
A documented indoor grow of the Federation line under 600 watts on coco substrate showed hardly any differences between the plants, and smell and appearance were almost uniform. Between flowering day 48 and 52, the grower expected a further 3 to 4 weeks until harvest. The flowers smelled sweet, of citrus, with spicy, minty and pine notes.
Aroma and Flavor:
Tropical fruit, citrus and sweetness run through the descriptions, often specified as pineapple and mango. Federation emphasizes a pronounced citrus smell for its line. The terpene details contradict each other: one strain description lists terpinolene ahead of caryophyllene and myrcene, while others put limonene or caryophyllene in first place.
THC and CBD Content:
The strain descriptions give 15 to 25 % THC; one lists 24 % THC and 1 % CBG. CBD is given as around 1 %. These figures come from strain descriptions, not from measured values of individual batches.
Effects:
Users describe a head-centered effect with lifted mood, creativity, energy and concentration, in part also talkativeness and fits of laughter. Individual reports differ and describe a physically relaxing to sleep-inducing effect or slight tiredness as it fades. Strength is perceived differently, from comparatively mild to very strong. Dry mouth, dry eyes and dizziness are named as side effects, as well as restlessness, anxiety and paranoia, in some reports mainly at higher doses. One report mentions losses in concentration and short-term memory.
