Papaya Punch crosses Papaya with Purple Punch and comes from Oni Seed Co; in cultivation, strong resin production, intense flowering smell and a tendency toward mold stand out.
A thick-stemmed plant frame with an indica-style structure, topped by light green, heavily frosted flowers with purple and pink accents: this is how Oni Seed Co describes its own cross of Papaya and Purple Punch, which circulates under the name Papaya Punch. A thoroughly documented grow confirmed the strong resin production and showed an intense smell during flowering, while several strain descriptions warn of mold in the last weeks of flowering. Accounts differ markedly on flowering time and on the classification between indica and sativa.
For the Oni Seed Co version, around 67 days of flowering and suitability for indoor and outdoor cultivation are listed. A cultivation business that grows the strain, by contrast, states 56 to 62 days indoors and an outdoor harvest in mid-October, and a cutting supplier gives 58 to 63 days. The same cultivation business describes the plants as sturdy with short internodes. The cutting supplier recommends SCROG and considers the strain prone to mold, which is why it advises regular checks outdoors.
The most detailed grow report dates from February and March 2018. The grower started 24 plants from seed and brought 20 of them to harvest. The plants were not topped; the grower only removed the lower shoots and regularly thinned out large fan leaves. The plants grew taller than the breeder had announced, and several phenotypes could be clearly told apart, some of them with purple flowers. Without plenty of calcium and magnesium, the leaves arched. According to the grower, the breeder had estimated 9 to 10 weeks; harvest took place after 65 days with mostly milky trichomes. The buds were dense and heavily resinous, and neither mold nor pests appeared. The grower rated the yield as disappointing and attributed it to the uneven canopy.
The breeders behind Oni Seed Co are Harrrypalms and Oninoodles. They crossed their Papaya, which according to the pedigree goes back to the Papaya from Nirvana Seeds, with Purple Punch, a combination of Larry OG and Granddaddy Purple. As the grow report shows, the strain was in circulation by early 2018 at the latest. One strain description names Cresco Cannabis alongside Oni Seed Co as originator, without elaborating.
Several descriptions classify Papaya Punch as an indica-leaning hybrid, one of them with 60 % indica. The cultivation business mentioned earlier, conversely, lists the strain at 65 % sativa. As a parent it appears in a series of newer crosses, including Papaya 99 by Brothers Grimm, Watermelon Soda and Mint Mango by Umami Seed Co, and Pot Tartz by ALTVM.
Oni Seed Co describes fresh papaya, along with apricot, grapefruit, orange and tropical fruit. Other descriptions add a cheesy note, in part also butter, gas or diesel, earthy tones and a spicy finish. A press report compared the scent to melon. The 2018 grower found the taste mildly fruity, leaning toward papaya or melon, and hardly sweet, even though the plants had a heavy, sweetish smell in early flowering. Individual user reports mention cream cake, grape, coconut and pineapple.
The breeder lists limonene, guaiol and bisabolol as terpenes. Other strain descriptions give limonene, linalool and caryophyllene as predominant.
According to Oni Seed Co, the strain is stimulating and mood-lifting. User reports give a calmer account: they describe relaxation, composure and drowsiness, along with good mood, silliness and a clear, focused head. Some describe a progression from an initially euphoric, head-centered effect to heavy physical relaxation up to couch lock, while a press report noted that the calm did not turn into sluggishness. Consumers list dry mouth, dry eyes and dizziness as side effects, and a few reports also mention restlessness, paranoia and headaches.
Oni Seed Co states 20 to 22 % THC and 1 to 2 % CBG. A sample examined by F.A.S.T. Laboratories in 2019 yielded, as a single measurement, 18.5 % THC and 0.11 % CBD. Other strain descriptions put the THC content higher, at 20 to 29 %.
Oni Seed Co lists the strain as regular seeds. Feminized seeds with the same parent combination are offered by Crop King Seeds and Rocket Seeds, without naming an originating breeder. Both entries largely agree: 16.67 to 20.67 % THC, 0.68 to 0.85 % CBD, 425.24 to 566.99 g per plant, a height of 152.4 to 203.2 cm and an outdoor harvest in mid-October. Crop King Seeds gives the flowering time as 8 to 10 weeks, Rocket Seeds as 62 to 69 days. Both rate cultivation as easy and name a Mediterranean climate as favorable; Rocket Seeds classifies its version as a hybrid with 50 % indica and 50 % sativa.
