Watermelon Zkittlez

Watermelon Zum Zum is the parent on which descriptions of the original California line agree, usually with the addition #3; for the cross partner of Watermelon Zkittlez, the details differ. Sometimes OG Eddy is given, sometimes Zkittlez der Terphogz, sometimes OZ Kush. The strain was bred by Dying Breed Seeds from Mendocino, California, and also circulates as Watermelon Z, Wmz or Watermelon Skittles.

Genetics and Origin:

Dying Breed Seeds is run by Shiloh Massive and the 3rd Gen Family. The original line was released as regular seed and is classed as predominantly sativa. For the other parent, several strain descriptions, the seed producer Pyramid Seeds and a producer from Rhode Island name OG Eddy. A US trade outlet, by contrast, wrote in 2023 of Zkittlez der Terphogz, and another producer lists Watermelon Zum Zum x OZ Kush.

Alongside these are seed lines whose breeders simply give Watermelon and Zkittlez, or The Original Z, as parents, such as Barney's Farm and Pure Instinto. The classification is correspondingly inconsistent: sativa-dominant for the original line and the S1 from Purple City Genetics, 50 % indica and 50 % sativa at Pyramid Seeds, 55 % indica at Barney's Farm.

Melonade goes back to Watermelon Z and Lemonnade, and Purple City Genetics crossed its own S1 with a Cookies selection to make Watermelon Cook. At the High Times Cannabis Cup Massachusetts 2021, a product named after the strain took 1st place in the Indica Vape Pens category. The trade outlet mentioned speaks of 7 gold or silver placements in 2019, 2021 and 2022 in which the strain was involved, but does not name the competitions.

Aroma and Flavor:

Watermelon leads the descriptions, mostly as candy sweetness, accompanied by tropical fruit, berries and citrus. Barney's Farm adds grapes for its version, Pure Instinto earthy herbs with a distinctly sour overtone, and Purple City Genetics floral notes. In a grow report on the Barney's Farm version, the watermelon only emerged after curing and stayed behind grape, berries and sour grapefruit.

Effects:

User reports describe fast-onset euphoria with an urge to laugh, followed by physical relaxation and sleepiness. There are dissenting voices: one report finds the effect closer to that of a hybrid or sativa, and descriptions of the lines classed as sativa-dominant speak of a stimulating, motivating effect. Dry mouth, dry eyes and headache are named as side effects, and dizziness in individual reports.

THC and CBD Content:

Test values have been published for 2 batches from US production; the testing lab is not named in either case. A producer from Rhode Island reports 22.65 % THC (2024). A flower batch from Massachusetts is listed with 28.84 % total THC, 0.13 % CBD, 0.59 % CBG and 2.50 % terpenes, led by limonene, myrcene and linalool. Such values vary by batch, cultivation and phenotype. Other strain descriptions give 24 % THC and 1 % CBG and list limonene ahead of caryophyllene and myrcene.

Cultivation:

For the S1 of the original line from Purple City Genetics, 8 to 9 weeks of flowering, an outdoor harvest in October and an average yield are stated; the flowers are regarded as dense and heavily resin-covered. A cutting supplier likewise gives 8 to 9 weeks for its cut, medium internode spacing, purple tones and good responses to topping, LST and SCROG at a medium difficulty level.

Versions from Different Breeders:

• Pyramid Seeds (feminized, Watermelon Zum Zum #3 x OG Eddy): 53 days of flowering under LED, 60 days under HPS, 400 g/m² indoor, 750 to 1,000 g per plant outdoor, 25 to 26 % THC. The breeder points to susceptibility to botrytis at high humidity.
• Barney's Farm (feminized, Watermelon x Original Z): 63 days of flowering, 500 to 600 g/m², 120 to 140 cm indoor, 150 to 200 cm outdoor, 28 % THC.
• Barney's Farm Watermelon Zkittlez Auto (Watermelon Z x BF Super Auto #1, 60 % indica): 70 to 75 days from germination to harvest, 90 to 110 cm indoor, 450 to 550 g/m², 26 % THC.
• Pure Instinto (feminized, Zkittlez x Watermelon): 63 to 65 days of flowering, 500 to 550 g/m², 25 to 28 % THC.
• Blimburn Seeds (60 % indica): 8 to 10 weeks of flowering, 350 to 500 g/m², 18 to 21 % THC.

Community Experiences:

In a documented hydro grow of the Barney's Farm version, the grower expected the height to roughly double after the start of flowering and let the plants flower for 75 to 80 days instead of the 63 stated by the breeder; 4 plants under 600 watts yielded around 18 ounces of dense flowers coloured purple and light green with little leaf content. Another comment on the same version was brief and disappointed. For the S1 from Purple City Genetics, a grower reports low yields in 5 runs. For the autoflower version, customer comments range from uncomplicated growth and a strong melon smell to seeds that did not germinate.
