Giesel

Giesel is considered a chance product, a cross of Mass Super Skunk and Original Chem D that goes back to Greg Krzanowski, the Massachusetts breeder known as Chemdog. The strain is passed on only as a clone and also circulates under the name Superdawg. It has left its mark mainly in breeding: a strain overview lists 22 direct descendants.

Genetics and Origin:

The cannabis operation where Krzanowski leads cultivation describes Giesel as an accidentally created cross. Other strain descriptions name the same parents but explicitly present the lineage from Chemdawg and Mass Super Skunk as an assumption.

Riot Seeds takes a different view. In the description of its cross Lemon Giesel, the breeder presents Giesel as a backcross of the now-lost Mass Super Skunk and sees in it the best surviving approximation of the plant regarded as the paternal line of the Chemdog family. Another description classifies Giesel as a variant of Sour Diesel. The sources also disagree on growth type: Giesel is listed partly as a hybrid with equal indica and sativa shares, partly as predominantly indica-leaning.

Chemdog himself combined Giesel with Original Diesel and Tres Dawg to make 3 Dog Giesel, a cross of 3 Chemdog lines whose source material comes from Sherpa Seeds in Vermont.

Aroma and Flavor:

Diesel and skunk dominate the descriptions, with an earthy base note beneath. A sour, chemical edge, pepper, grass and a slight lemon note are added. One product description highlights apple, apricot and coffee, and one strain description mentions sweet candy. Citrus and fuel are named for flavor; consumers add butter, gas, wood and grass. In one user report the flower tasted mainly earthy, and the expected diesel note was absent.

The terpene data come from strain descriptions and contradict each other: one lists myrcene as the dominant terpene ahead of ocimene and terpinolene, another names caryophyllene and limonene first, followed by myrcene, humulene and pinene.

THC Content:

THC figures in strain descriptions range from 15 to 21 %: 2 descriptions give 20 and 21 % respectively, a third gives 15 %. 2 descriptions put the CBG content at 1 %.

Effects:

Consumers describe a cerebral, euphoric onset whose intensity increases slowly. Talkativeness, creativity, focus and cheerfulness are mentioned; one report describes the effect as relaxing without causing sluggishness. A press article paints a different picture, describing a strong onset in the head that gradually shifts into heavy physical relaxation and sleepiness. Dry mouth and dry eyes are reported as side effects.

Cultivation:

Strain descriptions consider Giesel best suited to indoor growing and give a flowering time of about 49 days for indoor cultivation.

Versions from Different Breeders:

SoCal Seed Collective lists a seed-based counterpart to the clone of the original under the name SoCal Giesel. The line also goes back to Massachusetts Super Skunk, crossed with a ChemD male, and is listed as regular seed. The breeder states an indica share of over 60 % and 8 to 10 weeks of indoor flowering. According to its information, the plants double their height during flowering, and it rates the yield as average to above average.
