A documented indoor grow of Wonka Bars shows plants that stretch quickly and lankily in flower, need plenty of space between them and cannot do without supports. Other descriptions speak of a sturdy, bushy growth of medium height. The strain was bred by Exotic Genetix from the US state of Washington, from GMO, which is also known as Garlic Cookies, and Mint Chocolate Chip. Exotic Genetix released it only as regular seeds; according to the available information, it was never offered feminized.
Cultivation:
For the seeds from Exotic Genetix, a flowering time of 60 to 70 days is stated, while other descriptions give about 65 days. The grow mentioned reached 70 days. Outdoors in the Northern Hemisphere, harvest falls in mid-October, and the strain is described as suitable for indoor, outdoor and greenhouse cultivation.
Reports on plant height differ. Besides specimens that grow long and thin, growers describe bushy plants of medium height; the seed information says medium to tall, with many main shoots. Broad fan leaves and a good response to repeated topping are mentioned, and in the documented grow the plant also tolerated topping of the main shoot well. The seed information rates the yield as high, while the grower rated it as slightly above average.
Once dried, the buds from this grow were hard and compact, the calyx-to-leaf ratio was above average, and the plant did not prove susceptible to fungal infestation. According to growers' accounts in a strain description, the buds turn dark purple and orange and carry a thick coat of trichomes. A sample from Illinois, by contrast, was light green with orange hairs and densely covered in milky trichomes. On difficulty the sources contradict each other: one description considers the strain feasible for beginners too with expert guidance, another rates it as easy, while the grower of the documented run considers it suitable only for experienced growers.
Genetics and Origin:
On the GMO side are Chem D and the clone Forum GSC. Mint Chocolate Chip goes back to Thin Mint GSC, also a clone, and Green Ribbon BX, a backcross line from Exotic Genetix.
The descriptions disagree on the weighting. For the seeds, a ratio of 70 % sativa to 30 % indica is stated, and several profiles list Wonka Bars as a sativa-dominant hybrid; others classify it mainly as indica, one even with 70 % indica. Other names are Wonka Bar and WB. Wonka Bars #13 is a phenotype of the same cross that is described as somewhat stronger.
The strain appears as a parent in crosses by other breeders: TheHoneyCombFarms combined it with Apple Fritter for Apple Barz, Michiganrootz420 with Buttafingerz from 3rd Coast Genetics for Whatchamacallit, and Dr. Blaze with The Original Z from Dying Breed Seeds for Zwonka.
Aroma and Flavor:
Nutty and earthy notes with sweetness and a pronounced mint run through the descriptions, along with butter, chocolate and skunk. Several sources also mention garlic, and for flavor also fuel and a cool, menthol-like note on the exhale. The review of the Illinois sample recorded garlic and freshly turned garden soil on the nose, along with cheddar, basil, cacao, frosting and coffee. In flavor, cacao, coffee and earth led, with garlic and skunk following on the exhale.
Strain profiles give myrcene as the leading terpene, followed by limonene and caryophyllene. For the Illinois sample, myrcene, caryophyllene, alpha-pinene, linalool and humulene were listed, without quantities.
Effects:
Consumers report an uplifted, giggly mood, energy and focus, and a desire for conversation or creative work; relaxing components are also mentioned. Reports disagree on how the effect develops over time. Some find the strain stimulating throughout, while others describe a shift into calm and drowsiness after the initial phase. One report describes the effect as sitting heavy in the head and behind the eyes, while another complains that it does not last long. The review from Illinois describes pressure around the head, more drive and playfulness, and later a tingling sense of elation in the body. Side effects include dry mouth, dry or red eyes and slight paranoia.
THC Content:
Strain descriptions put the THC content between 15 and 20 %. For the Illinois sample, which went to the judges in 2023 as part of High Times' People's Choice Cannabis Cup, the review states 27.67 % THCA and 0.71 % THC. Which laboratory determined these values is not stated; it is a single figure.
