Big Apple

Three crosses with different parentage circulate under the name Big Apple. The best-documented line is from Seed Junky Genetics, bred from Apple Fritter and Sherb BX1; Alpha Genetics and Fresh Coast Seed Company list strains of entirely different ancestry under the same name. Strain descriptions that give a lineage refer to the Seed Junky line, while one further description classifies Big Apple as a cross of unknown strains.

Genetics and Origin:

Both parents of the Seed Junky version are crosses themselves. Apple Fritter traces back to Sour Apple and Animal Cookies. Sherb BX1 is a backcross in which Sunset Sherbert was paired with a cross of Sunset Sherbert and Animal Cookies Bx2, so Animal Cookies appears on both sides of the family tree. Apple Zack'z by Laid Out Genetics is documented as an offspring of Big Apple.

The sources disagree on where the strain sits between indica and sativa. One strain description gives 70 % indica and 30 % sativa, whereas a producer of the Seed Junky line lists Big Apple as a sativa. The contradiction continues in user reports: one consumer found the effect sativa-leaning with an indica-heavy undertone, another considered the strain indica-dominant.

Aroma and Flavor:

Apple is the common denominator of the aroma descriptions; the accompanying notes differ. One strain description compares the flavor to Red Delicious red apples and adds a sweet-and-sour citrus note, a creamy, nutty undertone and berries in the scent. The producer of the Seed Junky line speaks of sour citrus, cream and apple pie, a product review from Maryland of apple with a hint of kerosene. The strain description without lineage information lists mint, blueberry and menthol alongside apple. User reports compare the scent to freshly picked apples and the flavor to sour apple, supplemented by citrus and earthy notes.

Caryophyllene ranks among the leading compounds in all available terpene profiles. The producer names myrcene, limonene and caryophyllene, the product review caryophyllene, myrcene and linalool, and the strain description without lineage information caryophyllene as the dominant terpene ahead of limonene and pinene.

One strain description and the producer agree in describing the dried flowers as heart-shaped and heavily covered in trichomes. The producer also calls them compact, while the strain description mentions a dark forest green with yellow-orange pistils.

Effects:

In user reports, stimulating effects come to the fore. They describe energy, focus, elevated mood and euphoria, and in individual reports also giddiness, talkativeness and a tingling in head and body. Several consumers describe being able to work or do housework during the day. One report notes that the strain made the user sleepier over time, another stresses a pronounced body feeling.

Other descriptions focus on the body. One strain description outlines a progression from creative euphoria and focus toward strong heaviness, up to sluggishness on the couch; the product review from Maryland calls the effect sedating and muted, with a noticeable sensation behind the eyes. Dry mouth and dry eyes are named as side effects.

THC Content:

One strain description gives 20 to 23 % THC for the Seed Junky line. Alpha Genetics puts the content of its own version at 20 %.

Versions from Different Breeders:

For its Big Apple, Alpha Genetics crossed a Mexican sativa with an Afghan indica and states the proportions as 50 % each. According to the breeder, the plant resembles an indica in growth and branches heavily. The dark green foliage lightens in case of nutrient deficiency, and nutrient demand is high, especially in flowering. Indoors, flowering takes 60 to 65 days; outdoors, harvest is reached by mid-October. The strain is considered resistant to pests but prone to mold outdoors. Alpha Genetics rates the yield as high, and according to the breeder the aroma recalls ripe grapefruit. The line is intended for indoor, outdoor and greenhouse cultivation and is listed only as regular seed.

At Fresh Coast Seed Company, the strain is also called Big Apple Butter. It comes from NYC Diesel and Peanut Butter Breath and, per the breeder's description, is predominantly sativa-leaning, medium to tall and high-yielding, with a flowering time of 10 to 11 weeks. It is intended for indoor and greenhouse cultivation; the seeds are regular, and the breeder does not list feminized variants.
