3rd Coast Genetics describes the smell of Black Truffle as spicy rubber and fuel, while descriptions of a Gelato line of the same name mention tea, apricot and menthol instead. The difference has a genetic cause, because several strains with different pedigrees circulate under the name. Best documented is the cross of White Truffle and Pure Michigan, which the breeder MaxYields developed for 3rd Coast Genetics and which the breeder classifies as an indica.
Aroma and Flavor:
Other strain descriptions add earth, caramel, garlic and musk to the 3rd Coast version. A profile that names no breeder compares the scent to black coffee and blueberries and the taste to sweet grapes. As the defining terpenes of its version, 3rd Coast Genetics names limonene, caryophyllene and humulene at a total content of 3 to 4.5 %; for the Big Chief line, one strain description lists caryophyllene, terpinolene and limonene.
User reports paint a broader picture. Tea, lavender, citrus and herbs are mentioned, along with a cooling impression on the nose. Other consumers describe savory notes of cooked onion, garlic and cheese, or a mushroom-like smell that fits the name. A producer growing a selection of Gelato 33 under this name describes the aroma as earthy and savory with mint, skunk and lavender.
Genetics and Origin:
The White Truffle × Pure Michigan parentage is stated by the breeder itself; a producer growing the strain names the same parents and MaxYields as breeder. The second line is attributed to the California company Big Chief Extracts. Other strain descriptions list it as a cross of Gelato 33 and an unknown strain that was originally circulated only as a cutting; according to a further description, the full cross is unresolved. A hemp producer calls its plants a phenotype of Gelato 33. One entry is contradictory: it tells the Big Chief story but shows Pure Michigan × White Truffle in the pedigree.
As a parent, the 3rd Coast version is documented in Black Truffle × Zsunami from Pagoda Seeds, crossed with Zsunami from Archive Seed Bank.
THC Content:
3rd Coast Genetics gives 26 to 31 % THC for its version. For the Big Chief line, other strain descriptions give 18 % THC, one of them adding 1 % CBG.
Lab Results:
A single measurement on the Gelato 33 selection has been published: according to the producer, Confidence Analytics determined 34.1 % THCA and 30.1 % total THC in 2025. According to the producer, the leading terpene is beta-caryophyllene, followed by myrcene and limonene. These values cannot be transferred to the 3rd Coast version.
Effects:
3rd Coast Genetics describes a strong cerebral effect with a relaxing body feel. In several user reports the effect likewise begins in the head, euphoric or talkative, and then shifts into physical relaxation; some consumers describe the progression as gradual. Creativity, concentration, tingling, giddiness, arousal and appetite also appear.
Reports diverge on the character. Some find the strain stimulating, others sleepy, up to a heavy body feel that pins one to the couch. Individual reports find it light or short-lived, while another describes an intense body high. Dry mouth, dry eyes, dizziness and headache are named as side effects.
Cultivation:
For the 3rd Coast version, other strain descriptions give 8 to 9 weeks of flowering indoors and an outdoor harvest between late September and early October. One of them also gives a yield of 700 g/m² indoors and around 1250 g per plant outdoors, and does not list this version as feminized seed.
The description of the Big Chief line portrays compact, bushy plants with dense, cone-shaped flowers that turn deep purple at maturity, and gives around 60 days of flowering. Another profile describes large, dense flowers in dark olive green with orange hairs, and a user report notes that the flowers were green despite the name.
Versions from Different Breeders:
Big Dog Exotic Cannabis Seeds lists its own cross of Sirrus Black and Sonic Truffle under the name as feminized, photoperiod seeds. The breeder gives 9 to 10 weeks of flowering and 28 to 33 % THC, describes earth, gas and skunk in the aroma and names the strain as suitable for indoor, outdoor and greenhouse growing.
Crop King Seeds lists feminized seeds with the parentage Gelato 33 × unknown and gives 8 to 9 weeks of flowering, 24 to 27 % THC, a medium difficulty level, a warm and consistent climate and a harvest in October. The yield figures of up to 700 g/m² indoors and 1250 g per plant outdoors match exactly the values given for the 3rd Coast version.
