Pure Michigan

At the 2023 Cowboy Cup in Oklahoma, Pure Michigan appeared on the results list as a finalist in the Indoor Flower category; the top 3 places went to other strains. No further competition results are documented: 3rd Coast Genetics describes the strain as award-winning but names neither a cup nor a year, and the name is missing from the winners' lists of the High Times Cannabis Cup Michigan for 2022, 2023 and 2024. The indica-dominant hybrid of Oreoz and Mendo Breath F2 is the result of a collaboration between the breeders ThugPug Genetics and 3rd Coast Genetics, both from Michigan.

Genetics and Origin:

3rd Coast Genetics, built around the breeder Max Yields, contributed the Oreoz Cut 1.0, which was passed on only as a clone and which the company itself calls OOOZE. ThugPug Genetics pollinated it with its Mendo Breath F2 male Studly Spewright, whose line is attributed to Gage Green Genetics. Oreoz traces back to Cookies and Cream and Secret Weapon, Mendo Breath to OGKB and Mendo Montage. At 3rd Coast the cross appears under the spelling PUREMICHIGAN and is also called OOOZEBREATH there; elsewhere the abbreviation PuM turns up. In December 2019, a grower post already mentions the seeds as purchased. Other strain descriptions put the indica share at 70 %.

As a parent, the strain appears in a number of crosses: 3rd Coast Genetics used it for Cadillac Rainbows, Black Truffle, Blue Michigan and Detroit Breath, Exotic Genetix for Below Zero.

Aroma and Flavor:

The sources contradict each other on aroma. 3rd Coast Genetics describes a dark profile without fruity components, with burnt notes, hops and earth. Other strain descriptions, by contrast, list tree fruit, lime and ammonia, or speak of mocha, chocolate, nut and a creamy vanilla tone on the exhale. In personal accounts, ammonia, gas, earth and pepper recur, and a few mention lemon, coffee or diesel. As dominant terpenes, 3rd Coast gives myrcene, caryophyllene, limonene and humulene; another strain description puts limonene first, followed by caryophyllene and myrcene.

Effects:

User reports describe a relaxing, euphoric effect with good mood, talkativeness and silliness; a tingling sensation in the body and increased arousal are also mentioned. How heavy the strain feels is inconsistent: some reports describe sleepiness, sluggishness and couch-lock, while others feel focused or active. Side effects that appear include dry mouth, dry eyes, dizziness, an urge to cough and nervousness; one report describes noticeably impaired fine motor skills.

THC and CBD Content:

3rd Coast Genetics gives 26 to 31 % THC and 3 to 4 % terpenes for flowers of its own cut. Another strain description lists 29 % THC and 1 % CBG. Batch values that suppliers publish without naming the lab are in part lower: one batch is listed with 20.89 % THC, 0.071 % CBD and 1.9 % terpenes, 3 more with 20.01, 27.49 and 29.978 % THCA. For one of them 0.12 % CBD and 0.14 % CBG are given, for another 1.55 % terpenes. Values vary by batch, growing conditions and phenotype.

Cultivation:

3rd Coast Genetics gives 9 weeks of flowering; around 60 days are listed for the seeds from ThugPug Genetics. The plant is described as medium in height and very bushy, with short internodes and compact, resin-rich colas, whose dark green foliage takes on orange and purple tones in late flowering. Stretch is considered moderate; one strain description puts it at 1.5 to 2 times.

A clone supplier considers topping and SCROG suitable, mentions thinning and defoliation during flowering, and places the strain in mild to warm climates. Cultivation is documented indoors, outdoors and in the greenhouse. Indoor yield is given as 400 to 500 g/m² in several strain descriptions, and the difficulty is rated medium. The seeds from ThugPug Genetics are regular.

Versions from Different Breeders:

Philosopher Seeds lists a feminized cross of Gorilla Glue #4 and Pure Michigan under the same name, which makes it genetically a different strain: 8 to 9 weeks of flowering, ready for harvest outdoors in early October, 500 g/m² indoors, over 600 g and up to 1 kg per plant outdoors, more than 25 % THC. Premium Cultivars lists the name as seeds and as an autoflower variant, referring to Oreoz and Mendo Breath, without cultivation data.

ThugPug Genetics released a second version, Pure Michigan 2.0, in which a Mendo Breath F4 male named Junior is the father. Cosmic Wisdom lists feminized S1 seeds of it with 56 to 63 days of flowering; a single indoor report on this line gives 63 flowering days and growth from about 65 to about 150 cm. Pure Michigan #5 is also documented as a phenotype, to which notes of coffee, plum and mint are attributed.
